this project was born when I picked up a stick in the park. I noticed how greatly the balance affected how I could swing it and that made me think of swords. Realizing that I could not make a sword when I have never even made a gaurd I decided to go with a smaller blade at first. dangit Caleb you spread the sword fever to me. :P

This started as a peice of leaf spring that is apparently not 5160(it was from an old ford f150). forged down to thickness and lenght before forging the tang.

I don't have a fullering tool so I just used the edge of my anvil.

end of day one, about 4 hours of forging. Tomorrow I will forge the bevels and normalize if all goes well.

B) Spreading the fever feels good. Btw, what sort of forge do you have?

I have a brake drum forge and I burn charcoal. It gets hot enough to burn steel whenever I look away but I definetly am going to build a gas forge soon for forge welding. Nice sword by the way.

You've got good symmetry on your profile. Good eye & good forging.

But please tell me two things:

1. You roll that forge outside when you're using it.

2. You're not using that plastic ice cream container for an ash bucket.

Just making sure. B)

Keep us posted,

Don

I finished forging the bevels and the blade is normalized. some minor grinding to show the hammer marks. I am neither using the forge inside or using pastic for an ash drop that picture was taken on a rainy day.

I am going to file for a while tonight but the majority will be done tomorrow. hopefully tomorrow I will finish beveling and start burning the handle I might even heat treat.

This is the progress of day 2 total time to about 10 hours. I could have forged the blade in half the time if the peice I had started with was 1 inch wide but is was 1.5 inches so I had to draw it out.

so far so good I am going to draw file all the way but I should be done with the bevels in another 3 hours or so of filing.

total length is 12.25 inches and 1.125 inches wide.

the only hammer mark of any significance is already almost gone! :) I guess taking 4 hours just to forge the bevels was a good call.

Looks like you got the draw filing figured out.

Makes a world of difference, doesn't it?

Good work.

Thanks, I am going for flat grinds and it is suprisingly making a good peak already. I only got about 3 hours of work done today and it is going to take a while longer than that. Here is the progress for today the edge is still about 3/32 thick. sorry for the bad pictures.
