That would be great, George! You saved me a long phone call, I owe you one.

The demonstrators for Bowie’s Hammer-in for 2014 confirmed at this time are:

Wayne Coe Ribbon Burner Forge, How to build one. Also information on Pyrometers.

Jimmy Hyde Welding in the Ribbon Burner Forge without Flux.

Jimmy has been having some health problems and if he is not up to it Wayne will do the weld.

Alan Longmire will make a Spike axe. Just different enough from a tomahawk to not be the same demo he has done for the past 12 years.

Stephen Fowler doing a Forge Finished Knife.

Jesus Hernandez doing hamon including a clay quenching demo.

More to be posted as available.

I'm really happy about the dates for this one - work trip a week before, and Monday off to recover from the drive. I'll have a little show-and-tell, and a little for sale, but mostly I plan on kicking back and relaxing while I watch and learn a few things.

BYOB. Ron usually has a cooler with sodas and waters in it, and a coffee pot running. Since there's no charge to attend and he springs for a porta-potty too, ya can't ask for much more than that.

I just wish my Yurt was ready, but it's not going to be. Finding dry bamboo, 1/2" x 7', straight and not cracked in any quantity is proving challenging. I have 1/3 of what I need. Maybe next year.

Chris, there's a little bamboo forest near me, and I'm less than an hour from you.

Just to keep the interest up, this can be yours for one dollar if you're lucky at iron in the hat:

Hmmmm! I'm feeling lucky tonight.

Stephen Fowler is going to forge a kitchen knife, hopefully finish it and put it in the hat.

There will be lots of other great items in the hat.

Get your dollars together and help support this hammer-in.

Very cool, Alan. I'm working on a patternwelded 'microseax' that will end up in iron in the hat if I can finish the sheath in time... this is the only hammer-in I'm aware of that is free to attend, I want to give something back...

Oh Boy! Jesus, I have faith. I guess I'm going to have to bring more $$$$ for Iron in the Hat.

Alan, you have no idea how much I want that little spike hawk. I'm going to have to exercise considerable restraint in ticket-buying, lest Ron accuse me of voting fraud.

Now if I can just get my van to start - I suspect a bad coil, if the Gods smile on me I'll have it fixed, else I'll be renting a cheap car for the weekend.

Anyone know of a good cheap motel in the area? It looks like it might rain...

Just Google Map Bowie's address and then "search near by" for Motels...

But be careful...

That end of Knoxvile could bring a whole new meaning to the word "cheap".

I'd definitely recommend going with a known name like Hampton or Holiday.

Some of the "lesser knowns" probably rent by the hour.

Hopefully someone else can be more help.

Tent city? Cot next to the press, under the canopy?

That is my backup plan, since my van is not certified for a thousand-mile drive. Rental car secured for the weekend, tentative lodgings in place.

I live here and haven't actually stayed at any of these places, but my general suggestion would be to look at either the I-75/Merchant's Drive exit or I-40/Strawberry Plains exit rather than anything closer. The Days Inn on Asheville Hwy used to be OK but I haven't talked to anyone who's stayed there in a long time.

I do have friends who think the Best Western at Merchants Drive is fine, and stay there every time they come through. Was in the Days Inn near there recently and the lobby looked pretty dumpy.

We'll miss you, Kip!

And George, I second Mark on the locations, but I'd lean towards the Strawberry Plains Pike exit. It's a little closer and a straighter shot with less traffic to get to Bowie's. Avoid the Magnolia Avenue/ Asheville Highway places like the meth lab/crack dens they are.

Hey George,

I am staying at the Red Roof at 7525 crosswood boulevard. It seems safe here. there are a lot of motels at this exit. Bowie told me last year it was ok out here. he told me to stay out of east Knoxville.
