Daniel Cauble
Cannot keep my excitement at bay. Wife is driving us back from the 3.5 hour drive from picking up my newish KMG sander (only a year old). Bought this from a member at IFI. It is the 3hp 220v variable speed version. Came with the 10" wheel, tool rest, flat plate, 3/4" wheel, the tool rack and about 50-100 assorted belts ranging from the 36 grit Norton Blaze belts to 1500 grit 3M trizact belts. Needless to say i may have to put my press build off for a few months. Edit: I think it would make a few sick finding out tht i only paid $1200 for this. =D Edited May 29, 2014 by Daniel Cauble My Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/TAGMushy/videos
Matt Todd
I'm not exactly sick, more like totally jelly. A belt grinder is next on my wish list, but I will have to do like I did with the press and build one piece at a time. I am almost finished with the press though, it should be done by the end of next month. Congrats on the grinder, I'm sure it will make you more productive. Also, I found a chart that matches the HP required for a hydraulic pump and its gallons per minute if you are interested I can post the link. Ken Kelley
Yes please post. This baby will not only increase production but i can finally produce good looking plunge cuts. Very nice pick up! It will certainly help you immensely. Be sure to tell us what happens the first time you break a belt and it slaps you on top of the head. Now that ain't a whole lot of fun as I well know! GBrackett
I guess I'm lucky, over two years grinding and no slap yet. I must be doing something wrong. I'll still wear my hat just in case. Daniel Cauble
Thanks guys. She's got a little bit of surface rust due to the original owner moving to the beach with it. His new rental house did not have the electrical ability to run it, one of the reasons he had to let it go. I should have the outlet wired in by next week. Family member is an electrician with long scrap lengths of wire. All I need to purchase is the outlet. Checked everything out without the power on. Everything seems to be in good condition. Looked in the control box, and all is well. Nothing burnt or loose. Bearings are good, and so is the belt. Again, it was bought originally January 2013. Daniel Cauble
Forgot to mention. This also came with the 1/2" plate mounting table for all of the parts to be one complete machine, rather than having to make one and worrying about alignment. Kevin Colwell
let us know how it works. I am probably going to buy the same package, new. If I can sell one of the swords I am working on, and my other grinder, it would cover the cost. Now, I just have to finish the swords, and find buyers. How hard could that be????? especially appreciated would be any information comparing this to any other grinders you have owned/used. nice find! kc please visit my website http://www.professorsforge.com/ “Years ago I recognized my kinship with all living things, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on the earth. Daniel Cauble
Cleaned it up with wd-40 and a scotch brite pad. Sorted belts. Will add more pegs later to group belts easier. Really impressed by the solid construction. Nothing is made any less than 1/2" thick. Will have my electrician here this weekend. James Spurgeon
Nice find indeed, not only is that is a great package, it came cheaper than buying just the "basic" machine new! Daniel Cauble
Just made a video using it...because I could? Hehe. I'm bad at talking to any camera, I always get scatter brained. Kinda boring vid of mostly me just grinding on that Waki. And thanks John, much appreciated. Andrew Welch
I just got a new variable speed KMG-1 also! While the tracking is spot on, there seems to be a slight "wobble" of maybe a 1/4" on most belts. I have tried three or four different brands of belts of various types and only one has run with less than 1/8" of wobble. Any suggestions?
Alan Longmire
Two possibilities: 1. Either one of the axle bolts is warped (highly unlikely, Rob checks 'em all at the factory), or more probably: 2. You're not running with enough tension. Tighten the tension arm spring by "unscrewing" the nut a little bit, say four or five turns, with no tension on the arm. Add a belt, again untensioned, then lean down on the tension arm with all your weight while you slide the wheel arm as far as it will go, tightening the belt as much as possible, lock the wheel arm, and only then let off on the tension arm. You should not be able to change belts without unlocking the wheel arm. If you can you're running too loose. The belt should twang like a guitar string when plucked. Matthew Lomas
Another option is to swap to a gas spring setup. Constant tension at whatever force you choose (I went the 40, then 50 pound route). There are some thread floating around the internet about it, or I can put up part numbers from mcmaster later if you want. Only costs 20 or 30 bucks if I remember correctly and significantly improves tension and tracking.
