Ok I've used 1095 O1 and 1080 for blades but it's been hard to come by but I have a ready supply of 440C stainless can I use this during stock removal or is it useless

440c is one of the better stainless steels to make a blade from. It has been around for a long time, so is not one of the trendy new stainlesses everyone seems to want, but that does not mean it is a bad steel. You will not be able to harden it in a forge, it needs very exacting temperature control. It can be forged to shape, but does not like it one bit, so it would be best to stick with stock removal.

That said, 1095 and 1080 are cheaper, easier to forge, and easier to heat-treat. I've bought both from Kelly Cupples and Aldo Bruno.

You will have to send it away to harden, as george said, it is not easy, O1 is your best bet, but I'd reccomend Aldos 1084, not to costly, and easier to get good results...

Aldo's 1075 is pretty good too!
