Iron smelt 9/6/14

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang, We did a interesting smelt today. Mostly a test of the Royal Oak Charcoal. Made a ok bloom, and a wonderful amount of slag. I feel we even surpassed the Pigeon Forge smelt. Fun. Here is the Picasa story. Sorry I can't make hot links, you will have to paste. https://picasaweb.google.com/106800196895572422821/IronSmelt9614# 004.JPG 018.JPG 034.JPG

The slag taps were phenomenal! After hearing how the bloom did in refinement, it turned out remarkable as well!

Nice smelt ! Was it hard to bring the whole bloom up to heat to cut it ?

Yes, My forge, was not quite big enough.
However, I was able to get the bloom into good yellow/orange, where I was able to cut it after it broke from getting aggressive with the press.
It all worked out.
The smaller pieces were easier to work. I've been working with the charcoal forge a lot more this summer.
My gas forge wasn't set up for long items until I reworked it last month.
The charcoal forge was the only way I had to work on all the swords I have been playing with.

We will see if I can get this bloom all stuck back together, and folded up.

Fixed the link. I don't know what browser you're using, but it puts all kinds of wierd code in the text, which is why you can't get it to link...

Anyway, cool! Glad to see you got some iron out of there. 47lbs of slag, dang! And Jesus thought the Pigeon Forge stuff was too slaggy...

But this was pretty Easy ore slag, unlike that ugly slag from PF.

I was confident there was a bloom in there, but it was a total guess to how much.

So much for having the slaves break the rocks. :)
