Banking a coal fire

Recommended Posts

Hiya,

I'd like to know your ideas about banking a coal fire so you can go do something else for ??? long and come back with some fire left. I've been getting a bowlful of coke and covering it generously with green coal and walking away. I'm left with plenty of coke but the fire only lasts 30 minutes or so. Not flame of course, just enough, uh, coal (the red glowing kind haha) that turning on the air will get things going again.

Thanks,

Carl

Mine lasts a few hours that way, all day if I give the blower a crank every so often. What sort of firepot do you use? Shallow pots go out faster.

after pileing on coal like you discribe prop something in the ash dump to keep it open this allows a small amount of air to draft up and the fire can stay light for 1-2hours sometimes longer, some setup just need the fan shut off and the air gate opened. I have also keep forges banked by sticking a big chunk of charcoal in the middle and then banking aroud it .. the charcoal will smulder for 2-3 hours making relighting easy.

Cool, my pot is shallow on my home-made rig. I don't have an ash dump, I have to take the hairdryer out of the pipe and scrap the ashes out. So I bet if I just leave it out it'll get enough draft to go longer. And give it a blast every now and then.

Thanks guys.
