polishing antler without the aid of a buffing wheel

Recommended Posts

I am working on polishing up a handle for.knife #3. I am using some sandbar stag antler. I do not have access to a buffing wheel but I would like to polish the antler anyway. Does anyone have a good technique is series of grits etc that they would use for this purpose?

Sand it as high as you can, then what I did is get a bit of polishing buff that's meant for a buffing wheel, and rub a bit on a piece of scrap leather. Rub the antler with it. It works really well.

What Caleb said. I take it to 400 grit followed with #0000 steel wool, then hand buff with compound on the suede side of scrap leather. Takes longer than a buffing wheel, but at least it won't go flying across the shop if you slip.
