Kevin Colwell 171
Hello All, I bet many if not most (maybe even almost all) of you have already found this out. I am just trying to help. For those who have not, you can get a lot of good, FREE books through Google Books. Just limit the search to free ebooks. Here are links to a few of the ones I have liked the best. There are a ton. These are mostly from the time when hammer, anvil, lathe, and mill, were cutting-edge technology, and the textbooks about how to use them were at Harvard and such. They span the period where the differentiation between mechanic, machinist, and blacksmith was happening. now, I will shut up. The books can speak for themselves. Metalworking: A Book of Tools, Materials, and Processes for the Handyman (everything from casting, forging, ornamental iron, chasing, repousse'... an overview of most all of it). 700 pages of goodness. https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=UUdVAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PA73 Ancient Armour and Weapons in Europe https://play.google.com/books/reader?printsec=frontcover&output=reader&id=io4BAAAAQAAJ&pg=GBS.PA356 Ancient Armour and Weapons in Europe (Supplement) https://play.google.com/books/reader?printsec=frontcover&output=reader&id=dYIDAAAAYAAJ&pg=GBS.PP10 Modern Machine Shop Tools https://play.google.com/books/reader?printsec=frontcover&output=reader&id=jR9DAAAAIAAJ Weapons of War: Being a History of Arms and Armour From the Earliest Period until the Present Time https://play.google.com/books/reader?printsec=frontcover&output=reader&id=g0gBAAAAQAAJ&pg=GBS.PR3 L'Art Du Coutelier: Primiere Partie https://play.google.com/books/reader?printsec=frontcover&output=reader&id=1kviKw1ybSAC&pg=GBS.PR1 The Complete Practical Machinist (this book has a ton of good info for those new to shop work, hammer, chisel, vise, files, saws, and on and on... it is great!) https://play.google.com/books/reader?printsec=frontcover&output=reader&id=V80OAAAAYAAJ&pg=GBS.PA3 The Viking Age https://play.google.com/books/reader?printsec=frontcover&output=reader&id=jvcOAAAAYAAJ&pg=GBS.PR5 If nothing else, I hope it is helpful to have all of these in one place. You may need a Google account to open them, I am not sure. edited to add: Gutenberg project download Silversmith's Handbook by Gee (wonderful resource for making your own solder, casting, brazing, polishing, forging, etc.) https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/47816 Enjoy. David Einhorn 0
I used to be able to read Google books but when I tried it now, their web site said I could not read a book there without letting them to put cookies on my computer.
Kevin Colwell 171
David - yes, Google tracks everything you do. Out of curiosity, do you gmail? I want to know to find out if these cookies are different from those cookies. You may be able to agree and then clean the cookies out anyway with malwarebytes. Not sure, though. Anyway, there may be other ways to get these books. If you want a specific one, I may be able to download it and then attach it. kc edited to add: I hurt my back and I am bored, at home. I can't work in the shop, so I am playing on the computer (hence the long post of an unfinished knife-in-progress by me yesterday or day before). So, if you want me to try and get one of them for you, it is not a problem. Phil Ullrich 22
This is very cool, didn't know about it! Thanks Kevin. Yes I have gmail, I'm just a bit hesitant to accept cookies because so many online web sites either download or share information with outside businesses. Even as I type, this web page has six requests for information that are being blocked by my software.
