tormentchris
I've sharpened and sharpened and sharpended this thing and I can't seem to get it sharp enough to get a good shave. I know I heat treated it well. I don't know what the deal is. i took it on a 5 stone Lanskey set and then took it to a piece of leather that I used as a strop. Any ideas? Or solutions rather? It's driving me crazy... Thanks, chris

Caleb Harris
Too steep of an angle maybe? I believe on most hollow ground razors the bevel/spine crease line touches the stone as well as the edge. tormentchris
I'm pretty sure that's not the case. If so, then there would surley be grind marks on the spine of the blade. There clearly isn't. Thanks though.

Mike Andriacco
I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the Lansky system doesn't go fine enough to hone a razor. You want to go to at least 6k grit (and strop at that level) before you go to a loaded strop and then just leather. It might just be that your edge isn't honed right before you strop. Ian Fuller
The reason you don't see any grind marks on the spine of a straight razor is because people use electrical tape on it to keep that from happening. I take mine to 12k before i strop, but 8K or even 6K will work, but you will notice a difference. There are professional razor hone guys that will do this for a small fee. Good luck. son_of_bluegrass
My first question is Do you have experience using a straight razor? There is a learning curve to using one and if you don't have that technique down even a sharp razor won't shave well. Next question is what angle are you sharpening? Laying my razor on the stone (which is the correct way) leads to an angle of around 7 or 8 degrees per side (much lower than standard for a knife). Having watched government for some time, it has become obvious that our government is no longer for the people. If the current trend continues, it won't be long untill armed rebellion is required. tormentchris
WOW! I really didn't have any idea that it was that complicated to sharpen a razor. I've had several knives sharpe enough to shave hair off. I thought that since it is so much thin of a material that it would be alot easier to get that sharp. There's oviously so much more to it. Thanks so much i'll do what it takes to get this baby to were I can shave with it. Oh, and I guess I should learn how toactually use one corectly before I cut my face off. son_of_bluegrass
There are a few good resources/pdfs/e-books out there for free on shaving with a straight razor, easy enough to find with a search. There is one on Project Gutenberg and several of the on-line stores have instructions for shaving in one form or another. It took me a couple of months to really get the knack for shaving with a straight razor but once I did, I found nothing that gives a better shave than a sharp razor ( and nothing to give a worse shave than a dull one). ron Having watched government for some time, it has become obvious that our government is no longer for the people. If the current trend continues, it won't be long untill armed rebellion is required.
