Its all looking ever so great Jake. I missed this thread or would have said how exited by all this I am earlier. I love animal skulls (anyone who has visited me will know the macabre stuff dotted around the place)and I am a big Fan of the ones you have done on your other recent work.....Bring it on.

I am eternally envious and inspired by your ability to draw and carve. It is as if you can just extend your mind out onto the page or into a form. I know the technical skill and sophistication, and I am sort of romanticizing it. Still, you have a true gift, and it is great to see you use it. One of my favorite things in life is watching a truly talented person do what they do best. Thanks for sharing so much of your process with everyone else. Sometimes demystifying something can take away from it, but here, it just adds. The layers of tradition and story behind the work blend art into craft or whatever. Anyway, I love it. This stuff really facilitates the interplay between craftsman and patron that we all hope happens when people buy our work.



Plus, the beautiful and technically-challenging blade from Owen, with the great historical-inspiration, and the fact it came from the Nat Geo show group of stuff. This is just an all-around Kick-Ass project.

thanks Kevin! most days I feel like I can't draw or carve at all— I'm just muddling through. Your words give me hope. It's a funny business, the more I do this the less I feel that I know about it. :)

And that's exactly why you are so good at it. We'll keep watching with awe while you keep muddling :).

I know this sounds weird, but that actually gives me comfort. I respect your artistic ability a great deal, and to hear that from you tells me that those feelings are normal and that I am not strange for having them.

I thought I'd pinned this a long time ago, d'oh! VERY nice work, Jake. The metal is spectacular, but what I like the most is how your carving works so well with that incredible piece of maple, which in turn plays off the patterns in the blade. A tour de force!

Great collaboration with everything tied together so nicely.

 

Jake, do you know of historical examples of European sub-surface carving as you have done on the hilt? It's so effective as you've done here.

I've been looking at this for days, thinking that I would soon find the words to compliment this piece of art. I've since come to realize that I just cannot find them.

very cool Jake, skull seems very popular for the sword, ring, pendant, and etc.

I like dragon, and familiar with that, i hope one day i have a chance try on some skull one.
