Is it too late to join this? I have been blacksmithing for a little less than 2 years so far, but I think that I can make a decent blade. I have some copper that I have already melted down from pipe and wire. I also have a used file that I bought from a Lowes (hopefully Kobalt isn't garbage). Would Ipe wood that I got from a contractor count? I think that he got it from some wood depot. If that's not acceptable, I can always buy some stuff.

I do not believe that there was a deadline for signing up, just for having the knife completed.

So, if you think you want to join the fray, jump on in!

As for the Ipe wood, what does that mean?

It's just a type of wood. It is dark brown and has a tight grain. My carpenter friend used it as the top boards for a pergola. I think he got it from some wood depot, I'm just wondering if that would qualify.

It's also known as Brazilian Cherry, even though it is not related to cherry in any way. My local big box stores have it in the form of hardwood flooring, so I vote we allow it.

I think somewhere back in one of these KITH threads someone said "Hang the code and hang the rules, they are more like guidelines anyway."

In another spot I think we accepted recycled/repurposed/etc. stuff for this project. I vote we take it too.

Agreed, there are a lot of woods in hardwood flooring... and I'm against having to go out and spend money when you don't have too. Also, those Kobalt files seemed to be decent steel. The ones I've had hardened and snapped after heat treating.

... and another one bites the dust.

I'm trying to break ground for a new shop building. So far I have only cut trees and moved junk. I'm about ready to stake it out and consult with my backhoe man.

Good news is that I have two winter's worth of stove wood and a half-forged Bowie from a bush hog blade.

I wasn't sure I was going to have time again this year but I want to get in on this after seeing Collin's bowie. I won't be able to start until after the Blade Show but that should give me enough time to make to make this happen. I added my name to the list.

Are you going to post some pics, or do we have to wait til June 30?

You left us hanging on the handle design........

And I'm off the list. It doesn't look like I'm going to make it, at least not in a fun and relaxing way, without it feeling like an obligation that I must finish and set too many other things aside for. For the others, good luck, and at least I look at the nice things you will be making :)

I'll have to withdraw my blade. The edge steel is to far off center to have hardened steel along the whole edge. Only having days left I don't think I'll be able to fix this or make a third knife in time. I'll have to figure out a way to repurpose the steel on the spine. It would be a shame to scrap the fruit of my first successful aristotle furnace.

Unfortunately I'll have to drop as well. I had a good push at the beginning but then school got in the way of things. Once summer started I had to work on bringing money in and wasn't able to work on this knife until yesterday. Heat treat didn't come out right and my blade didn't pass my tests. I was really looking forward to this but unfortunately, things happen. :( Good luck to all and I look forward to see more of yall's completed knives!
