We will do a big Catalan Smelt at this years F&B

Recommended Posts

Hi Gang,

The smelting gang will be doing a monster Catalan style smelt at F&B this spring ( April 1-3 )

Jesus, Dennis, Zeb, Daniel, Alan, John (if he is around), and myself will attempt to smelt 200 lbs of Carolina Easy ore (Limonite) , into a big old bloom !!

If we do it right, we could have a 30-40+ lb. bloom! FUN!

We will be starting a bit later, in order to have a evening bloom birth, for great photo effect !! (maybe) It is about a 4hr process, maybe a bit more with this kind of size.

Anyway, come check it out.

Mark

I did know that old slag piles from old bloomery operations had been re-smelted by modern means to extract iron but I had no idea that the old methods were that inefficient.

Should be a good time. Yea Doug, I'm happy when I get over a 20% yield from ore, some ore's are better and some people are better at getting good yields. I'm still betting with 200 pounds of ore in a full sized Catalan, we get a good 50 pound bloom.

Alan, I look forward to seeing you there, was hoping you could make it.
