On the steel industry side; the local suppliers cant get any more steel

Just called my steel disturber, they started laughing and assured me, not true.

Gun range sent out an email, outdoor ranges still open.

Theses blades are from 3mm thick 60mm wide 1070, and they stayed straight.

Well, I don't know what to tell you, Gerald. Just repeating word around the shop (which came from our local supplier). You are 3 hours away too. I hope you're right.

A hour away, Buchanan is 70 miles from my house.

Well I'll be. You oughta invite me down sometime! You're welcome this way. Idk why I thought Charlottesville was so far away. Yeah, Charlottesville is 1h 45 min from the shop, so we likely share a supplier. Not sure where ACE or steel services gets their stuff from. We only go through BMG on special occasion.

You probably right @Alan Longmire

Edit: clearly memory has failed me, I looked at your profile, Gerald. Nor sure why I thought u lived in Charlottesville. I shall hush up now.

What size flat stock did you use for these spring fullers?

At a guess its about 5mm thick x 25. (it might even be 6 x 30 mm) - just what was lying around when I made them.

Its way too thick though, makes it tricky to get the workpiece in there. I am going to cut the 'U' off the end, and weld a new 'U' piece in about 3 mm thick to make them a bit more forgiving.

While I was grinding another couple of blades this morning I decided to see what I could do with the one I forged yesterday and have to admit it came out sort of ok. Because it was a big ish blade and way too thick to take down to a kitchen knife as I did want to leave the evidence of it having been forged (being the first i have done) so the only thing I could come up with was the bowie styled blade so that is what it will be. It is evident that I have got it a bit thin er in the canter than at either end but I am not going to fret over ths for now. I will see how it cleans up after the post HT grind and make a decision from there.

I got some forging time in this evening before the snow/hail mix started. Kept working on this little kiridashi style knife. I’m going to draw out the tang another inch or so and then work on Forging a story towards the tip. I don’t want to go any profile grinding on it, and a minimal amount filing on it.

That's a really nice stitching horse Faye, and good use of it too!

Thank you. My Great Grandfather got that stitching horse for my mom when she was my age.

Straightened a small Messer (top) and got a second one (bottom) almost done forging. I may tweak the bottom one a bit before heat treating, but we'll see. They're part of an experiment I want to try concerning short Messers/Hauswehr carried by peasants as can be seen in various medieval paintings.

A bit of a clean up on the blade and fitting the SS guard this morning and when I made up my mind what I was going to do for handle material went ahead and got the spacers ready with red, ss, red and another ss to go under the one nice piece of willow I had on the shelf so will get to fitting the handle later in the day.

Some progress on this with the tang hole drilled, broached to fit, the guard pre shaped and it all glued up in the clamp for the night.

Week 2 of doing remote support work from the "sitting room" of my bachelor flat, more sitting than usual, aggravating, frustrating, so when I disconnect that vpn and slam shut that notebook, the dog gets a walk around the block and the knives stay untouched...
Managed to make 4 Mohair wool bolsters this weekend, figured out on average 18m of wool does the job so the second lot went quicker.

Doubled up the wool, still, getting 9m of doubled up wool into the resin and wound up onto the tang in between the clamps   is not for the faint-hearted....much acetone was used afterwards...even on my face

How do you get the epoxy to penetrate all the way in Gerhard?

8 days of not leaving home has me getting stuff done around the house. My youngest son has been on me about getting a tire swing set up so I used the spare mud tire for my truck in the background.

Yesterday I ground the profile on the more curved small Messer I'm working on, and immediately said nope, too much curve. So today I straightened it out some and also bent the tang downward a little more. It looks and feels much better now, though I'll need to touch up the profile again after forging.

I'm quickly running out of room in the shop so I'm going put a 14x10 or 12 foot addition on the back of my shop. Shouldn't take too long since I cant go out and do anything and I have a lot of materials to get started.
