Nice looking rabbit........just kidding. That's a nice bit of forging. I never did any of those animal or wizard heads, but Liz has. Typically at the ABANA conferences there is a forging competition where several of those works show up.

I think she's hooked now.  Probably time for her to get a real hunting knife.  Especially since I told her that I'm not field dressing her next one for her!

Way to go Uncle Alex.  Now bring her into the shop and have her make her own knife too!

I first read this without looking at who you quoted, and thought you were comparing Alex's niece's deer to your mule deer

Way to go uncle @Alex Middleton

I've taught youth shooting for a number of years.  Please tell your niece that the girls always shoot better than the boys.  I'm not a hunter, but have always suspected they would also be better at hunting than the boys for the same reasons.  Patience, maturity, and mental discipline.

Nah. They are better than the boys because they look less threatening and smell better. :o:lol:

She's got to get over her nerves before I'll say she can shoot straight.  This deer was less than 10 yards and she still managed to hit it in the spine.  She was supposed to be aiming for the lungs.  I told her it was a good miss lol.  Better than last year though.  She had a clean miss on a deer that was standing in the exact same spot!

So some practice is on the cards to get her eye in

Definitely needs more practice to make her trigger control second nature. We've been shooting off and on all summer, and when she's concentrating she'll hold a 2" group at 40 yards with her little bead sited .410.  Put a deer in front of her and she jerks the trigger like its her first time ever shooting.  Watching them grow up and mature right in front of your eyes is one of the things that makes the youth hunt so much fun.

I had to change my flex day this week and I could do a little forge work. Two kitchen knives 7.5" and 8" long, and a blade that started out a few years ago as a sidesword and then got forgotten for a while. I picked it up today and decided to redo it a little.....56,3 CM edge length by 3,5 cm wide.

Been busy and it’s been a bit hotter than I like outside, but I have finished a few things I’ll post in a bit.

Today, though,  is a really good day. I finally have upgraded my Harbor Freight anvil-shaped object for a lovely new Atlas Knife “Grahm”

I have to adjust my stand for the taller Grahm, and I need to put something on to make it quiet - it rings like a church bell!  I have some rubber to try, and if that fails then I’ll go get some caulk

Less is usually more when it comes to decoration.  I'd leave it plain.

You will be absolutely amazed at the difference a steel anvil makes versus a cast iron ASO.  Good for you!  Clamp it down hard and the ring will be minimized, especially if you use the rubber mat.  If you use silicone caulk it will not ring at all, but then you won't be able to turn it over to use the swedge part around the foot. It's fairly permanent.

Yeah, there's already a lot I believe...

I'll rework the horn a little bit as I think the size is not quite right yet, and finish the wood nice and slick.

I'll have to ask you what you think of it in a few weeks.  I'm anvil hunting.  I like the surface area on top quite a bit, and the price is pretty competitive.

If I might add a suggeston that would be workable with the tools you have.

My eye is telling me the horn needs another border element between it and the wood handle.

This may be as simple as a few grooves cut around the front end of the wood to mimick the ferrule/bolster/guard thingy. I think that would add some visual balance.

At the very least, I would suggest chamfering the front edge of the wood so it rolls into the horn.

The piece of wood isn't at it's final size yet. But, yes, chamfering will make the transition smoother and more natural. Isn't it what they call the "museum fit"?

Thank You! :)

It's a hamon-ish/temper/hardening-line/...thing..
The only reason I hesitate to call it a hamon is that the steel is 1084, I didn't shoot for a specific design, and it has an interesting "angular" hardening line happening towards the base....
