What did you do in your shop today?

It's been more complicated and took way longer than I had anticipated, especially with the protruding copper piece, but I think I like how it turned out. What do you think? The idea was to have sharp facets while keeping this area comfortable. The protruding piece also has the function of anti slip.

Gave myself an excuse to go back over the finish of the blade and accidentally copper flashed the blade for the sub-hilt fighter, lol!  Time to throw some labels on which tube of ferric is contaminated!

Ha!

The other evening I had an inkjet stencil ready to etch a logo and I dipped my etching swab in the baby food jar with acetone in it instead of the one with salt water. Took a minute to figure out why my stencil dissolved.

Definitely time for some labels.

Do to forced down time (doctors orders to stay in bed - not going to happen - or sitting down) finally gave me a chance to try casting. I don't think I did too badly for a first go of it. Made it easy and cast in pewter (actually hard solder; tin, copper and silver).

After casting.

and all "cleaned up". Two inches in diameter. Going to become a Christmas tree ornament (yeah my family does very non-traditional ornaments - we have a Cthulhu ornament...)

I'm more concerned with how early you are in getting it made.  It doesn't seem right to have an ornament made before Thanksgiving, let alone before Valentine's day.  Over achiever.  :)

As I said, I'm on "bed rest". Was a nice relaxing thing to do since I'm not allowed to really work in my shop for the next 2-3 weeks. Had to something otherwise I'd be going stir crazy.:)

Killed the motor that I had on my surface grinder.  The only other motor in the shop that I could put on it was the 1/2hp, 3450 rpm motor that has been on my 2x48 for years.  Since I had to pull that off, I took the opportunity to put on the 2hp, 3450rpm motor that I recently picked up.  Holy hell does that take off some material!  I spent ten minutes turning scrap metal into dust just for the fun of it. :D

long day. Ground, hardened and tempered a couple of blades, and finish ground the one I'm thinking of as an adventurers knife - it's a somewhat fantastical take on a sgian achlais/gralloching knife. On that one I laid out the clay for the hamon in a knotwork pattern, which is something I tried a few times about 20 years ago, but couldn't really get to work. This time was pretty successful, i think. We'll see how it comes out in the polish...

Most of this was done earlier this week, but I'm bad at uploading pictures to the computer so I can post them easier, lol

First, I got the Sub-hilt Fighter all together finally!  this is a picture of the dry fit, but not much different than how it looks now with the glue:P

I got an 80CrV2 K-tip kitchen knife heat-treated and did a super rough grind and etch to check the temper-line.  I've been enjoying the gentle waves that 80CrV2 gives with a simple clay.:D

Started out the day working on shaping the handle of a simple hunter.

20220220_135020.jpgGot a little careless on the grinder.

That'll cost me more time than I care to think about right now.

Switched gears and decided to start up the next project on my list.  A friend at work gave me an old 20 ga Savage single shot shotgun that had been made inoperable. The barrel was bent and the stock broken.  I cut the barrel down to just the chamber, and filled it full of 1080 powder with 2% nickel.

Got it forged out and did a quick test etch on the end of the billet.

After a bunch of surface grinding, I have enough material to make a nice little hunter for him.

That will look bit**in' if you grind a half-ladder into it and then forge it to shape. I'm guessing a really cool looking wolf's tooth will emerge.

Shoot, good idea.  I wish id have thought about somethinglike that.  Its too late now, I'll have to remember for next time.

I want to try one with a rifle barrel.  I think the rifling will look pretty cool after the bevels are ground in.

It gladdens my heart my heart, I'm posting here so that means I pulled my finger out and got something done this weekend.

Prepped a 21 layer 1070 and 15N20 (some equivalent actually) billet, managed to set the weld by hand without cooking it, and put a few twists in.  The billet is still way too thick to get tight twists, so next plan is to forge it back to square and less beefy, then twist it some more.

I've been struggling with a stomach bug and I had to bury my dog last week:(, so it was good to work, burn and make something.
