I decided it was time to cast a new ribbon burner for the forge. While I was at it, I decided to make a couple of smaller ribbons for some other forges in the works.

I peeled the forms off those burners,

made a satanite flare for the sword forge burner,

and cut a small propane bottle down for a crucible forge.

Heat treated 6 blades Saturday, spent the morning finalizing bevels on a cleaver from old circular saw blade and that was first to go in the quench from 845C.

Did an edge quench and all seemed well so I dunked the whole blade in to cool the spine.  Left it for a few moment, reached in with pliers, might be incidental but the moment the pliers touched the blade I heard the loudest !PING! I've ever experienced.
Massive crack just behind the middle of the blade running up from the edge almost to the hamon and then horizontally almost to the front of the blade :(
First 80crv2 blade performed like a champ, and the D6 tactical hatchet came out fine.
The other 3 blades are a story for their own topic.......

I had an unfortunate morning. While stamping some blades forged from 52100 I had one break. Very unusual for me, given how thick it is and that I was stamping on a flat ricasso. I also effectivly detroyed my makers mark stamp in the process.

I thought the dramatic change in grain structure rather intresting, and the grain structure as a whole disappointing, given that I gave it a good thermal cycling after forging.

Ouch!  I hate that your stamp is damaged.  But yeah, that grain shows it got overheated at some point in the process and wasn't cycled enough.  You can't over-normalize 52100 for our purposes, do it five to seven times on the others from that batch.  You may have diminishing returns after the third cycle, but it's cheap insurance to rock it back and forth through critical.

Just finished my first sword-shaped-object. Tried lots of new stuff on this one. Not perfect, know where I can improve, but very happy with the results. 18 inch blade of 8670, mild steel fittings, and a leather wrapped handle.

Oh, and the pommel nut was turned on a wood lathe with hand held tools...

Slightly dreading tomorrow, colleague is coming over to make knives for his boys, the NR-14 Russian scout knife is the chosen design.......his wife is Russian

I got a 14 year old kid to grind an acceptable bevel, but another friend in his early 40's just couldn't manage a few weeks ago.  Had him practice on mild steel first but just couldn't get the bad habits while engaging the belt out of him.

Still alive, and envious of folks who can run their forges without heatstroke. Great to see all the amazing things y'all keep producing!

I'm sitting things out right now: most days this summer it seems like all I need to do is stick the billet outside in the sun for a minute for it to get hot enough to work.

I have been itching to try a sanmai for a bit. It was 100 plus here 2 days ago so I carried my forge outside. lol

On a bright note I have my first successful forge weld(well so far so good knock on wood.

Sammiched a piece of the admirals 1084 between some 1018.

I think the last attempt failed because I used a36. I had no idea there were different grades of common mild steel at the time until you guys learned me =)

Finally sucked it up and riveted the hilt for my dad's birthday sword. A long way from being a perfect match for the original, but trying to make a complex 3d object from a single image, I'm amazed I got as close as this...

  • 2 weeks later...

working on the scabbard. heavy-ish cow hide, lined with sheared sheepskin fleece, laced with 2.5mm cord, with a couple of layers of thin poplar veneer on the front to stiffen it, to prevent the tip digging into the fleece. it'll get covered with some nice green lambskin once I decide where to put the risers to secure the suspension straps. I also forged rom fittings from thin steel sheet, forged a new pommel from 40mm tube and brazed the top joints of the basket. It's getting there slowly..

Getting the next few weeks work with all stainless blades sorted. There were a set of the steak knives and a couple of the chef knives in the ready drawer and the bearded chef has been heat treated but not ground yet. The rest are still to have all the drilling to be done before foil wraping and heat treating so will pick up the liqid nitrogen when I am in the city tomorrow for the cryo quench. That is another thing that has gone price crazy, where it used to be $12 and change per litre 18months ago with the last lot I got being $35 a litre so it is good to have a these all in at the same time to make it worth the cost of the LN.20220815_150605.jpg

"I need to get busy on some knives".

But how can you pass up a job for one of your grand-kids? They always move to the top of the list.

My daughter bought an old county school desk off of Craigslist for $5.00

pre1.jpg

She asked if I thought I could fix it up a little. I couldn't back down from such a challenge.

I had a 5' section of oak I had cut out of an old church pew to shorten it up, so I got all my new wood from it.

Got to try my hand at some steam bending for the seat and back slats:

After some trial and error it actually worked.

Here's what I came up with:
