I had one like that too (minus the inkwell, those were down in the basement of my ca. 1936 schoolhouse), but that's just because the Knox County, TN school system didn't modernize anything until well into the 1980s. We could sit in desks that bore our parents' carved initials from the 1950s. The janitor never stripped the floors, he just added a fresh coat of wax every month, so there was about 1/4" of wax buildup over the folded cardboard shims that kept the bookcase in the 5th grade classroom level since around 1940... 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A 10x10' cinder block square outside the end of the building to burn the trash. I probably ingested enough lead paint to deflect radiation. In Corryton we had the coal furnace and no A/C, but we did have an actual asbestos-lined steel incinerator upwind of the ball field. Uptown, I tell you! Gotta make a bunch of blacksmiths knives for groomsmen gifts I almost got 2 forged out but I think I'll end up unbending and trying to get just another 1/2" of handle or so and clean up the inside before wrapping them back up. The bigger one could use some refinement all around really. Shows im a little rusty. Hoping to make 2 more next weekend then 2 more after that. Zeb Camper Posted August 22, 2022 Share Posted August 22, 2022 Thanks Joshua! Ive enjoyed seeing your stuff on fb. Gives me the itch to get back to it. I'm not actually sure what I've told people at this point lol. So much has changed I couldn't call it myself. I had thoughts of selling at one point because my singlewide that I'm living in was such a dump even just a year ago. I was very anxious too. I had thoughts of "what if I only make knives to get attention?". Then I figured out i have a health condition contributing to the anxiety. I Got medicated for all that and started feeling better. Then i wanted to wait and see if i would go back to knife making. If i really enjoyed it or if it was dopamine i wanted from posting stuff. So I distanced myself from the forum or FB groups even for just giving advice. But every fall it seems like i still really missed it. I also had to replace a transmission in the truck so I sold my power hammer to help pay for that. And where I was then; I needed to make damascus at the very least. So I think I just needed some time to kind of start over and be ok with just doing it for fun. But I think I'm back at it for good:). 4 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I asked myself the same question a while back. I found that I just love making stuff and if I stop, I'll really miss it after a while. Hell, during lockdown when I couldn't make knives, I made loudspeakers and an amplifier . Dopamine is nice, but in the end, posting your stuff often leads to other sales and that matters a lot more than a like on FB. And, is it me or the serious buyers are rarely those who send likes or comments? I've gone (or going) through a questioning period, came to the conclusion it's the business part of it, so most of what I make these days are pay-it-forward projects, gifts for people I appreciate or who need a pick-up. Picked up an indian chief a few days ago and gave it some TLC. It's a little rough around the edges, but it has a handle so that's a step up from what I have. No more dropping vice grips on my toes! While I was at Woodcraft grabbing some other supplies, they had a huuuuuge pile of Claro Walnut in sizeable chunks, $5 apiece... all from the West Coast they said. You might check your local store to see if there's more lying around out there. Gerhard Gerber Posted September 12, 2022 Share Posted September 12, 2022 Had a stall at a "bush market" Saturday morning, no sales, very little interest, locked my keys in my car and spent too much on food. Friday evening I had an idea about making a dagger, that drove me into the shop for the rest of the day and the whole Sunday apart from washing the puppies and breakfast/lunch at 3pm 9pm last night 5 blades came out of the 2nd temper cycle. Everything turned out great, only possible failure is there might be a crack/delamination on the tip of the little twist damascus knife.
