Kreg Whitehead
My best attempt at a hamon to date.
Kreg Whitehead
Decided to bust out another kitchen blade yesterday. Went for a clayless hamon. The one side I am happy with...the other side not so much. How I ended up with the soft spot in the belly is beyond me. So much for the/my hamon being 1/16" deep. I am guessing my edge is somewhere in the .020 range.
Kreg Whitehead
Now I am wondering if its just an etch/contamination dealio? Man I am having issues. lol Was a clayless hamon attempt......looks like a soft spot on the one edge Edited February 26, 2018 by Kreg

If you have any pictures I'm quite curious to how such a heavy ring is going to look. http://mefecit.nl/
Troels Saabye
Pictures are comming Piet yeah - you probly could forge a bracelet with that amount but I got tired of fooling around with small rings, and they were hard to get to the right level of "roughness" that I wanted. jheinen
After learning the miraculous things a disc grinder can do from David Lisch, I ordered one from Jose at Pheer and finished putting this thing together today. A disk grinder is a wonderful thing. Good for flattening bevels, and grinding flat matching angles. I have the exact same one from Jose. I also bought the table for it, which I like. “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." -Albert Camus http://www.krakenforge.net/
Joshua States
I think the disc grinder is a "must have" for serous makers. VSR drive is also a must have. Here is something I purchased for mine and I highly recommend it: http://www.nielsendesigndiscgrinder.com/ He also sells different faces for the magnetic chuck. I have all three and an extra flat one that I epoxied a piece of 3/16" 35 durometer rubber to for a soft finish and rolling the convex edges. For the table, the one from Beaumont is a little more expensive, but I think it's more adjustable. https://beaumontmetalworks.com/product/adjustable-work-rest-for-disk-grinder/ Edited March 2, 2018 by Joshua States “So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. Will Wilcox
Got the plunges cut and the guard lined up on a damascus hunter im working on. Still debating about the handle in my head. Heres a sneak peak of the pattern This picture was taken before the plunges were cut, obviously.
DavidF
Love that blade Will. Gorgeous. Please post pics when you get the handle selected and assembled. Epic work
Will Wilcox
Thank you, David. I will certainly post it on here when it is finished. It will likely be a while, however.
SteveShimanek
I spent some time cleaning up, putting away tools, and derusting and sharpening stuff. I got new heavier duty wheels on my little trailer for hauling wood that needs to be cleared from all of the downed trees on our property after the Gita cyclone. Once cut and stacked, and a shed roof built, it will be fuel for charcoal for projects later.

Jon Cook
Yesterday, I almost finished fighting the taper on this thing. It's part of my "try one new thing every time" curriculum. Played with the forge some, as well. Definitely going to need a baffle.

Joshua States
Alan, I think those dirk pommel pics are very cool. “So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. Vern Wimmer
Alan, would that fit into the "cloisonne'" (sp?) category ?
Alan Longmire
Thanks, Jon! Your tapered tang looks good too. Josh: That's the obvious part. Wait until you see the blade and read the tale. Strange things are afoot at the Circle K... (minor hint that will have to suffice until I get good pics of the thing, and maybe until the sheath is located) Vern: yep. Faux garnet cloisonne. In faux gold. With real plaster filler under the faux gold checked foils under the faux garnets.
Vern Wimmer
Well I'll be a fauxed monkey.
Alan Longmire
I should clarify: it is genuine cloisonne technique. Only the garnets and gold are of the faux variety. That said, nobody will ever make me kill a Nauga for sheathmaking material. That would be unconscionable. To quote Allan Sherman, " and a chair made of real Naugahyde; when they killed those naugas, oh, how I cried."
