Kreg Whitehead
I ordered some .130 2.5" 15n20 from the barron a couple days ago...and some brass and belts from tru grit. Gonna make myself a set of kitchen knives. In the mean time I am working on this rasp and piece of leaf spring. I started the leaf about a month ago and set it down because I wasnt happy with the shape. I brought it to work today and came up with this. If any one has any input I would be open for suggestions. I picked up 3 buffing wheels and some green ,white and red compound yesterday for my 6" grinder. Is 3450 way too fast. I buffed the edge of one of my recent blades yesterday with some green and it seemed to work ok...but have yet to try a whole blade.
SteveShimanek
Kreg, it is easy for heat to build up quickly and draw temper excessively when buffing, so watch out for that; also, a buffer is a dangerous machine just waiting for its chance to grab your project and try to throw it at you, so be careful. Vern Wimmer
Kreg, Steve is so right. Be careful with the buffer. It is easy to get complacent with one and the get hurt with one. Oddly enough it seems to happen with drill presses as well. Maybe because you aren't using hot steel and they don't have their own blades people may underestimate their potential for inflicting injuries. Kreg Whitehead
Thanks for the heads up fellas. I stole a little trick I saw on the internet ad flipped the machine backward on my bench so the wheel is spinning away from me. You should see my 2 index fingers.....I think its time to start wearing gloves. lol
Vern Wimmer
I will, sooner than later, put mine on their own pedestal bases rather than a bench so that anything they tear loose can go on its way, away from me without anything to bounce back off of.
SteveShimanek
I have been trying to redo/finish some shirasaya "resting scabbards) for some Japanese blades i have been working with; I am using sokui (sp) rice glue to put them together, and it seems to be working pretty well, though I did have a couple of areas that needed to be redone, as it is very hot and humid in my shop, and i may not have had enough glue in certain places. Zeb Camper
I cleaned my shop from the inside out. I almost got it all clean accept for that dresser and droors in the back right corner and that random a$$ screen door. My family had a ton of stuff stored in there and I told them it had to go, but 2 years later and it was still there So, today I was like "what about Zeb's needs?" I packed it all up and crammed it in the little half burned storage building on the hill! I felt like Braveheart FRRREEEEDOOOOM!!!

Vern Wimmer
Zeb's living the dream folks. That is a great incentive to get my tail in gear and finish the spring house chores so I can go through my shop like green corn through the new maid. I bought 3 acres with this shed and a trailer off my grandmother for $20,000. I'll have the bank paid off in a couple more years. 2 hours ago, SteveShimanek said: I like the anvil setup in the foreground; what is the history on that anvil? That anvil Is a mousehole that I cherish dearly. Alan dated it's manufacture to be around 1820 (give or take). It may or may not have been used by my family who were wagon makers for a very long time. It is small, but rebounds like a much bigger anvil. I really like that I have access to all 4 sides unhindered by a horn. The plan is to finally get around to mounting that Fisher anvil in the background to a log to replace the old beauty. Kreg Whitehead
One step forward and two back for me. Thought I finished my file knife but I am not happy with the ht. It skates a file more than the handle/un quenched portion of the blade....but not as well as all my other blades. Thunk I just had a little de carb going =/ Got the leaf rough ground. I haven quite decided on handle shape yet......but I did figure out one thing not to do from the last cord wrap. On a bright note the handle will be easy to remove Nice shop Zeb.......I bet my work zone is more like a 12x 12

You could always make a stand from 2x10 or 2x12. Offset the pieces 1-1/2" each way and you get a built-in hammer & tool holder. 1 “So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. Zeb Camper
After work, my best buddy and I ran wires for a 120v outlet at my workbench and wired a 250v breaker in my panel and ran some 10/3 to an outlet for my 230v motor that I'll be using for my power hammer build. We also had to wire the motor. I mainly just handed him tools. "No Zeb! I asked for the connector, not a wire nut." Electricity is like witchcraft to me, so Its nice to have an electrician as a best bro. I didn't have real lights until he put some LEDs in for me. He wants a damasscus knife in exchange for the work and I'm happy to oblige
Austin_Lyles
Well howdy everyone! It seems I've fallen a little behind with my shop hours. Having been occupied with moving from one state and back, a job search, and balancing work with play (not much time for play anymore), I've neglected to complete or even start a blade. Anyways, I ended up being quite productive on my days off and managed to dust off ye ol'e grinding wheel (literally!). I was sure to throw sparks out the garage door for all the world to see, and ended up having a crowd of interested neighbors and their not so amused wives from across the street. Sure cuts nicely and a pleasure to cook with.

Kreg Whitehead
My makers mark showed up the other day. This one turned out ok....first one needed more etch. Probably would have been ok if I would have been smart enough to clean the top of the stencil. I had a light bulb moment on the second blade. lol Do you typically just mark one side of the blade. You probably can see much of it in the photos....but the piece of w2 has quite a bit of activity going on. I need to build one of those photo box dealios you guys talk about. Edit...any constructive criticizem(sp) is welcome. Not sure if the mark should have been closer to the heel...and or centered a little better on the top of the blade ect.
