JPH
Hello: OK.this damn faire is getting to me and this is just the second weekend...so here's something I just made..why?? I dunno..just seemed like a good idea at the time..Don't think it turned out all that bad...No real basis in anything other than I just whipped it out on a whim as they say... A two handed broad dagger (?) ... The blade is in my Solar Storm pattern, L-6 and 1060 ...with a 14 1/4" long, a full 2" wide with twin fullers each side. Forged phosphor bronze mounts with a small smattering of file work...bronze studs in the "fossilized" Bovine Ivory grip. OAL is 20 1/2": The sheath is oxblood leather with bronze chape/locket and is set with a 77.7 ct star ruby (cut this one meself a while back...) it's about the size of an olive!! Big Ol' ROCK this is...I do one "spiffy" blade each year for RPFS and I think this is it. I think it turned out ok for something out of the deep, dark (and I mean deep and dark) recesses of my feeble mind... Hope these pics turn out.. This little guy is heading down to Irwindale for next weekend... Bob Hewitt
...from the deep, dark recesses, oh, wow, the contents of your head must be a sight to behold! That is one superb piece! All I get from my deep, dark, recesses is twisted, battered and generally mangled lumps that used to be innocent virgin steel, maybe I need a transplant... ...or therapy! Great piece, well done! Kevin Colwell
That one has style. The fittings add a lot, too. As always, your pattern welded steel looks killer, and the fullers really set the piece off. The picture makes it look as if the grind line coming off the fullers toward the tip goes a little woogity, but I presume that is just a light thing. Huge stone. I don't know a friggin think about stones other than how to make a bezel for them. But, it seems at home where it is now. That should be a great addition to the kit of some Wicca practitioner (probably spelled that wrong). It is up there with some of the comple-grind dirks you have made, in terms of coolness. I really like it. Hey, do you get any trouble with warping when you quench the L6 mixed with 10XX steels? (I guess it shouldn't be any worse than 203E and 10XX, only for different reasons, but I have no real knowledge). Never used L6 with anything but O1. rock on. kc please visit my website http://www.professorsforge.com/ “Years ago I recognized my kinship with all living things, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on the earth. Hoy's Forge
Some castle dweller should be pleased to be so armed. A blade fit for a king. Love that "fossilized" Bovine ivory! JPH
Hello: In reply... Juttle: Believe me..the one place you never, ever want to be is in MY mind...seen too many things..some really weird things in all my years of Military/Law Enforcement..couple that with my own quirks..well this is what I come up with. heh heh heh... Kevin: Now that you mention the tip..it does look a bit wonky from the light..guess the reflection off of that flat didn't work like I wanted it to..Oh well..as far as warpages goes.. Don't ya know in order to prevent blade warpage you have to do the following: 1 Wait until Midnight of the full moon to heat treat. 2: Wear nothing but a jockstrap and a light coat of oil with a red rose between your teeth. this serves a purpose..the oil is to prevent flash burns from sparks and the rose is a colour/temp gauge .When the steel is the same colour as the rose..you're good to go... 3: Before you quench the blade make sure your facing magnetic north.. 4: Quench in ONLY the blood of virgin unicorns. 5: As you plunge the blade into the quench you have to break out in a full blown rendition of "Springtime for Hitler" from "The Producers"..followed by "They Are Coming to Take Me Away" by Napoleon XIV... Do these 5 steps properly and I guarantee 100% that you will never get any warps.. Hope this helps... Wes Detrick
Damn JPH... the double fullers and with the swept plunges that go into them... just outstanding. And that's just one part of the dagger. “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." -Albert Camus http://www.krakenforge.net/

Joshua States
The "oil to prevent flash burns" must be critical, especially when quenching in "the blood of virgin unicorns." That stuff is pretty explosive! Nice blade Jim. I think the fullers look a little wider and deeper at the ricasso end than they should, and I'm not sure I "get" that cross piece on the pommel end, but it is very stylistically a JPH knife, and I like your style. On another note: Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the material properties of L6 and 15N20 were almost identical. I know the L6 has a little chromium and the 15N20 has a higher nickel content, but what does that equate to in terms of final product or working characteristics? “So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it.
