What tool is this?

Recommended Posts

I found this on an online auction site. I was listed as an "Elizabethan Caltrop" :D . I think I know what it is, but I just want to hear what other people think.

looks like a pick + knapping tool + screwdriver for a flintlock riffle

This is what I think as well. A flintlock something, not necessarily a rifle.

The picture is all I found, no description or measurements. I think it's a little tool kit, probably for field maintenance of a firearm. I'm guessing that the flat blade screws off, leaving you with a finger hole handle, the pick is exposed then. I think the finger screw undoes the rest of the handle exposing at least one more tool.

I also found this picture of another Multitool, supposed to be French, early 19th century.

Leave it to the French to create the first multi-tool with a corkscrew!

These are pretty cool.

Lol, that's not a corkscrew, that's a ball extractor, for when you get a lead ball stuck in the muzzle of your rifle. You screw it to the end of your ramrod and then dig the teeth into the leather ball to pull it out.

It's actually a cleaning worm. You wrap a wad of tow (flax fibers) in the screw and swab the bore with it. Ball extraction can be done with the worm, but at some risk if breaking it.

Sounds like a multi-purpose item.

It's a ball extractor, it's a cleaning worm, it's a corkscrew. When the going gets really tough, it's a belly button enlarger.
