Gary Mulkey 1,357
For years I always hesitated to forge my fittings but recently I've had a lot of fun doing it. It certainly allows you to do a lot of things that would be near impossible otherwise. Here's my latest made from some 300 layer random pattern Damascus. After I finished forging & grinding this one, I did the final shaping with an oxy/acet torch. I didn't get photos of all the steps of making this one as that's hard to do in a one-man shop. Hopefully you can get an idea of how this one came together. This is the first time that I've made this D-Guard. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Gary
Wesley Alberson 138
That is really cool! it looks like if you ran electric current through the guard, there would be a spark in between those two balls. Igor, flip the switch!
JJ Simon 123
Gary, are you punching your hole or drilling and filing?
Gary Mulkey 1,357
Gary, are you punching your hole or drilling and filing? I'm drilling them. On the guard I drilled two and connected them with a dremel cut-off wheel and then filed it. Gary
Jim P 0
Neat idea, I wouldn't of guessed that's how you did it.
Doug Lester 282
I'm not a fan of D-guard bowies, or bowies in general for that matter, but that guard on a reproduction hanger or hunting sword would look great. Doug

Brian Dougherty 1,174
Gary, that is outstanding as usual. It is your handle work that got me to try forging my own fittings!
Kevin Colwell 143
that is a great knife. Thanks for so readily sharing your techniques.
