JeffFogleboch
Just finished this one up...I had started a thread over in the hot work showing the making of this tanto if you are interested. It is also available for sale in the for sale portion of the forums. w1 steel with a basswood shirasaya and an African Blackwood mekugi. I think it has what would be considered a hitatsura hamon but I am no expert. Please tell me what you think about it and feel free to critique so I can make the next one better
jdsmith02115
Beautiful! Is the steel W2? Looks as though it might be.
JeffFogleboch
Close! One number off...this steel is W1. I can't really tell much of a difference between W1,W2, and low manganese 1075...they all seem to pull a fantastic hamon
John Smith
I love it Jeff and sorry been super busy, how is the Wakizashi going? John Smith
Yes it can be done, as I have see the geometry of the blade and if your careful you can adjust it purely by the stones. Kevin Colwell
that is the correct name for the type of hamon, as far as I know. Also, looks great. I love the low manganese 1075 for larger blades. I have convinced myself that you can get a good bit of lath marthesite with it, which should be great for toughness. W2 for smaller blades. I have some extra-pure crucible W1 that I am holding for just the right project, though. i am not an expert on that sort of blade/fitting (Japanese) so I can only say that it looks very good to me. please visit my website http://www.professorsforge.com/ “Years ago I recognized my kinship with all living things, and I made up my mind that I was not one bit better than the meanest on the earth. I said then and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it; while there is a criminal element, I am of it; while there is a soul in prison, I am not free.” E. V. JeffFogleboch
Thanks for the kind words guys I'm glad you like it! Kevin- I plan on using some low mn 1075 soon on a sword...I like it because it's easy to forge, gives a spectacular hamon, is tough, and polishes rather quickly compared to W2
