Eric Dennis
Hello, I'm recently made a pretty heavy duty guillotine tool for myself. I made some simple fullering dies for it out of mild steel, but as I plan on making other die shapes I'm wondering what others use for steel material? Is mild steel fine? Should I go for a higher carbon content? Should they be hardened? What do you use? Thanks in advance, Eric
Alan Longmire
Mild works fine as long as you work hot.
Geoff Keyes
I made mine out of heavy (5/8ths) truck spring. Because the lengths have a bit of curve, I took a heat on them and flattened them out. I did no further heat treat to them, and they have held up just fine. The hammering surface has deformed a little, but the die surfaces are fine.
