I may be able to make it this year, but before I fill out the form (specifically the tailgating bit) does anyone want some railroad welding thermite buttons? They just re layed the track in my area and I picked up about a dozen and I cand do anything with them myself.

I'd be happy to take 3 or 4 if they're available.

The press yes. The rolling mill requires a generator as we cant handle 15hp on a single motor. Im hoping to have one here but we will see.

This year is odd for us. We will be filming constantly right up to the hammer-in (5 weeks straight). More on that in a bit!

Planning on making it down, looking forward to seeing that big mill in action. I've stayed at The Comfort Inn in Catonsville several times, it's very affordable and it's less than ten minutes away from the forge.. and if your towing a big ass trailer there's a parking lot out back to park.

Can the guys traveling and renting rooms post a bit about experiences where to stay?

thanks!

I'll be staying at the Ramada west Baltimore again, I've stayed there each of the last 3 years. It's pretty basic, no frills, but priced right, and easily accessible straight down Baltimore national pike from Marriotsville 15 minutes away. I'll be arriving a week ahead of time as this year I'm going to hit up the antique arms show the prior weekend, and then probably do some day trips out to gettysburg and some other places in DC prior to the event. I'll be available to help set up tents, clean up, move things, etc if needed.

Well, you'll have tents set up in your yard when you get home if you're late. Leave instructions on how to set up the meal tent, maybe folks can take care of that for you as well. Between the Virginia Boys and the Vista Cruiser Crew, I'm sure we'll have enough early-arrivals to take some of that off your shoulders.

Thanks , I will have to leave some instructions. We have to stay off a section of the yard at the new house as MD Dept of the Environment is having a new septic area defined and they want us off it till June. No biggy we have plenty of room.

Rick Janney is here full time now and he will know where everything goes.

I like being part of the Vista Cruiser Crew B) Looking forward to seeing everyone!

You are frikkin Chewbacca!

Let not the swords of good and free men be reforged into plowshares, but may they rest in a place of honor; ready, well oiled and God willing unused. For if the price of peace becomes licking the boots of tyrants, then "To Arms!" I say, and may the fortunes of war smile upon patriots

Yeah, just have him flag off-limits with some engineer tape, we'll have it sorted when you get home. ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Cameras start rolling on Monday.  Looks like we will have a few smelts on projects here between now and the hammer-in.  That should force some cleanup/setup that will help us when you guys come in too.

There will be a dumpster here and a few new storage buildings.

That off limits area will be staked and wrapped today.  Its pretty obvious.  The side yard and church lots are open of course and the day lots at the train tracks.

We are not advertising this at all anymore, just putting it up on the site and here.  Growth is good, but things could get overwhelming.  I suspect that next year it will be invitation (which of course includes everyone who has been here before)  But as always we try to keep an open door policy.

There will be so much stress between now and then Im really looking forward to seeing all you guys and some chill time with you

You guys know what this means :-)

50 pounds of brisked trimmed down to 37 pounds ready for prep.

Sorry, no post prep pics.  Briskets are injected and have been marinading for past 12 hours.  They will be ready to go on the pit in about 9 more hours.  Anyone my area tomorrow is welcome to a taste before I cool, wrap and freeze.  More pics to come.  -Doug

Took longer than expected, but the meat is finally nestled snugly in the pit under a warm blanket of sweet cherry and pecan smoke.  Had to improvise emergency repairs on the pit as the mount point for the fan rusted away.  Some 2" Kaowool, a piece of stainless pipe and duct tape got me operational.

Not pretty, but it should get me through the cook.

On the pit and ready to sleep through this bitingly cold night (it's 20F now and still dropping).  Charcoal reload between 12:30 and 1, then I should be able to get 5 hours or so of sleep.

So I never did circle back with the pics of Burnt Ends scraps I dumped on my neighbors last Sunday.  Briskets are wrapped and frozen, securely stored at an undisclosed location until the grand event.  13 days and counting down.  Very much looking to seeing everyone.  Hoping it warms up a bit.  Cheers.  -Doug

Be heading down on Thursday.  Will be available to help the set-up crew.  Can't wait.

This is the best gathering anyone can attend.  I'll try to smuggle in some firewood for

evening fires.  And bourbon, Doug, Bourbon!
