Nijmegen Sax

Recommended Posts

Started work on a piece inspired by the Nijmegen Sax. Forged it in December, heat treated on Christmas day, and finish ground it today.

13" blade, 30mm wide at the forte, about 7mm thick, wrought Iron over 1095. Will get mounted inbog oak and wrought. Anyone have any Ideas for some carving? I'm not very au-fait with the period or region...

That's a beauty, I like the subtle curves on that.

that is going to be great.

On the original, are the bolster/ears/things forge wedled on?

They're slid over the tang, and the pommel (2 part) is peened. On the Nijmegen one it's not visible, as it's fused by to corrosion, but in other examples it's more clear.

Hey, I'm also making a sax inspired by this one! I used artifacts from the Staffordshire Hoard along with some advice from David DelaGardelle to design the ornamentation. There's some pics of mine over in this thread www.bladesmithsforum.com/index.php?showtopic=34379#entry336633

Me too, though mine has been pretty much static the last 6 years. Though during that time I learned a lot more by studying the original. I still need to make up my mind about how to fill in the missing bits of decoration on the blade. But at some point I'll just start carving. The dimensions of mine are off, so I will need to make an improved one after it anyway.

I'd venture to say it looks better than it did 2-1/2 years ago too!

Progress, no matter how slow, is still progress.
