Matt, that thing is amazing. Is the faux-garnet technique historically accurate? I mean, obviously not using epoxy, but-- I think you get what I'm asking.

Seriously, though, that seax looks like it came from some kind of legendary treasure hoard or king's ransom. Awesome work.

NOW we're talking!  :o

I was skeptical about the faux garnet idea at first, but darned if it didn't become so spiffy I'm jealous.

I think you just got a Fiery Beard.  Do I hear a second?  B)

+1 for beard. Not sure if my vote even counts. But hey my .02

As for the graver work, I would love to learn more on that also. :-)

And BAM! Seconded!

I saw this piece in person last week and it is incredible. Matt seriously killed it with this one, and from start to finish this piece has been a pleasure to watch come to life! Also, Adam, there are some historical pieces that feature glass instead of some of the cells, though it appears the others are garnet in these pieces, so it may be just for looks. That being said some of the broken pieces show lots of red resin on the inside to help hold everything together, and it would have been quite easy to use that resin as a filler if someone had wanted to!

Congrats Matt! Now you just gotta make a sheath to match huh? :)

What a spectacular build! Matthew that is some impressive craftsmanship.

Woohoo!  I'm deeply honored to have my facial hair ignited (really).  And thanks for all the kind comments.  I'm very happy with this one.  Kinda sad it has to leave home.

You're close enough Kevin - you'll have to come over and I'll show you my setup.  For everyone else the short answer is http://www.airgraver.com/sharpening.htm.  I use these templates and it makes the whole thing dirt simple.

Mattew,

I will take you up on that. I figured you used templates. I have a hammer handpiece from magnagraver but I need to get the sharpening just right. Thanks. I will probably buy the templates and set up a drill press with an arbor and lap or just see if I can use them with stones.

Here's a visual summary of my sharpening setup:

IMG_2620.jpg

Lindsey templates, a WorkSharp with Lindsey diamond discs stuck on the glass wheel, and an extra-fine sharpening stone for touchups.  The templates are designed to work with a 1/2" high stone, so I put a wooden shelf on the worksharp 1/2" down from the disc so the templates have something to sit on.  It's a $140 ($100 workSharp + 2 $20 lindsey discs) hack that gives you 90% of the function of a $800 GRS power sharpening system.
