Troels Saabye
Hey guys I just purchased a new drill press ( 1 hp motor), and now I'm in the marked for a belt grinder. The one i've found has a 2" belt and a 2 hp (1.5 KW), but is that enough power for grinding scale off of steel and making stock removal knives ? Dan Waddell
My cheap belt grinder is 1/3 hp and can do that. I'd bet 2hp would do it well.
Wayne Coe
Check out the DVD on the DVD and belt grinder kits page of www.WayneCoeArtistBlacksmith.com. then the motors and VFDs page. I recommend a 1.5 or 2 hp motor. Let me know if I can help you. Brian Dougherty
My 2x72 grinder has a 1hp motor, and it is effective but underpowered. In my opinion, 2hp would be a very good setup. -Brian
Gary Mulkey
2 hp is a good size for the grinder but scale & belts don't get along. I suggest removing any scale with an angle grinder before going to the belts. Gary ABS,CKCA,ABKA,KGA
Troels Saabye
Thanks guys . Okay, didnt realize the scales were that kinda trouble, since i've been filling by hand until now.... A single blade takes me around 3-4 weeks like that. But great I will remove the scales with an angle grinder first then
Brian Dougherty
Gary is right in that the fire scale will destroy a brand new 36-grit ceramic belt in just a few minutes. You probably even noticed how hard it was to file through if you were doing it by hand. You can also soak the blade in vinegar overnight to remove the scale. I tend to favor this approach if I am not in a hurry because I hate the noise my angle grinder makes... -Brian
Wayne Coe
Rather than grinding with an angle grinder to remove fire scale, first soak it in cheap white vinegar, wipe it down, then wire brush with a cup brush on an angle grinder. The vinegar will loosen the fire scale so that most will wipe off but the cup brush will get the rest. Let me know if I can help you. Troels Saabye
Okay thanks Vinegar ? I'll have to try that, cause fire scale sure was tough removing with a file.
