Sub-Hilt Bowie

This fighter has a blade of 336 layer random of 1080 & 15N20.  The raised clip has an actual sharpened edge.  I gave the blade a slight recurve mainly for aesthetics.  The integral sub-hilt guard is a 21  layer Damascus turned on edge so that the layers would  follow the sub-hilt when forged to shape.  The handle is a black walnut burl with 416 butt cap & pommel  nut.

This is the first raised clip blade that I've made in quite a while.  Let me  know  what you  think.

Thanks, gentlemen.  I'm glad you liked it.

Jim--The sheath is done  by coming straight back from the widest point of the blade.

Wes--Unfortunately the size of  all photos is limited here and this is as large as I can do with 50Kb.  If you want any close-ups then I will be glad to do that.

Every time I see one of your bowies I decide that's the best thing I've seen for a good long time, and then along comes another one and I decide that it's the best bowie I've seen in a good long time!

I'm trapped, please stop, now!

seriously though, that's a fantastic piece, everything just seems to "fit" it really is a looker! That's got to be one of my favourite bowies ever - until you start the torture again!

I'm minded of a Frank Zappa track, "The torture never stops..."

An integral subhilt, whoa!  Very cool, Gary!

About the picture size: the 50kb thing was from 2004 when storage was very expensive.   Dave says we don't need to do that anymore.  Just set your resolution to 72dpi and your width to around 750-850 pixels and you'll be fine.

The software that I use doesn't  give me dpi.  What the max allowed?  I  can adjust that.

Gary - I usually dislike the subhilt design, a lot. It looks monstrous to me (like a monkey with two asses). But, this one has a nice look to it, and doesn't look like a machinest on meth tried to make a knife. The curve for the forefinger looks comfortable and elegant. The raised clip is an interesting touch. I want to make a saber with a yelman some day, along the same lines.

nice take on this, and looks good.

HAHA, thanks for that Kevin; it made laugh.

Gary - Yes!  Thanks so much for posting the larger pictures!  I hope that means that you will be posting larger pictures of all of your work now.  Bigger pictures certainly do it justice.  Great work

Very cool Gary, that's one of my faves I've seen from you.  Pleasing lines and the handle fitup is a nice touch.  Is the guard section integral to the blade, and therefore forge welded/added?  Props if so!

Hi Salem,

The guard is slotted for the tang but not forge welded (the sub-hilt is integral to the guard but not the blade).  Glad that you  liked it.
