J.Thompson
Hello, I was hoping you could help me figure out a problem Im having with my KMG. Its a 1 1/2 HP grinder with the three step pulleys. I have it wired for 110v. The problem Im incurring is that after about 40 minutes of grinding the motor over heats and throws the safety switch. Ive lubed up all the grease zerks i can find. Everything is lined up and im not bogging down the motor. Im just not sure what else I can do. Do you have any suggestions for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks , Joihn
Alan Longmire
hmmm.... My KMG motor gets pretty hot after 40 minutes of grinding, but it's never thrown the thermal switch. I suspect too-small wiring. Does the wire itself get hot? If you're pulling too many amps for the wire size that will do it. You want at least 12 gauge wiring for that size motor, and 10 gauge is even better. What kind of motor is it? brand, housing, etc. If you aren't getting enough air flow on a TEFC motor that can do it as well.
J.Thompson
The motor is the Leeson motor that came with it. Ill have to check the wire size as I am not sure. I did rig up a small squirrel cage fan to blow directly on the motor but it didnt help. Still cut off after about 40 minutes. Thanks for the suggestion Alan, Ill look at it today. Ken Kelley
John Sorry, can't help you here since I'm not really an electrical guy. I have a 1 and 1/2 horsepower motor on my homebuilt KMG but I've never had a problem with it overheating no matter what I throw at it. Hope wiser people than I am can help out.
