JeffFogleboch
hey guys this isn't a blade but I thought I might share some of these forged steel strikers I've made. I got an order for some a few days ago and I really enjoyed making them. I made the smaller one for myself and the larger one was part of an order. Tell me what you guys think! -Jeff Fogleboch
Wesley Alberson
Very clean forging! One of my friends made a fire steel out of titanium, it gave off some beautiful white sparks. Chris C-S
Certainly on my to-do list. Was planning on leaf spring steel or 1075 off cuts. Q. does the edge need to be a 90 for the best sparks? Well done on these. Thanks for sharing.
JeffFogleboch
Thanks a lot guys! Is the titanium harder to get a spark from? And I'm not sure. I don't think it matters too much about The angle but this happens to be square. Just make sure it is hardened and I temper mine to about the hardness of a file. Also make sure the striking surface is ground clean! Scale won't spark. -Jeff Fogleboch
Timothy Artymko
Looking good! I want to make some of these before the end of summer... but who knows
MikeDT
Jeff: Great symmetry and form! Very nice. Chris C-S: most hardenable steels will throw sparks, but in my experience spring and 1075 are only so-so. I get the best (and seemingly hottest) sparks from 1095 and other hypereutectoid steels. Also, I don't temper them, when I use 1095, I just get the striking portion up to critical like Jeff shows in his picture and quench in water. JeffFogleboch
I'd also like to add that I am willing to take orders for this if you guys are interested. They will be $25 shipped in the USA. If you guys want I can also post a tutorial on how I make these next time I go out and forge some. I choose to temper mine because as quenched steel is just too brittle. There is a good chance it will break if you drop it on the ground. I only temper at a really low temperature and it still throws wonderful sparks but has a lot more toughness in case you drop it. -Jeff Fogleboch

Karim
until now never known the usage of this item. Seems cool to make. Does the steel need to be high c and ht or does mild suffice
JeffFogleboch
Mild steel won't spark it needs to be hardened high carbon steel. I'll post a tutorial in the near future guys! -Jeff Fogleboch
