Removing stains from ivory?

Recommended Posts

While sorting through some old boxes of my father's things, I found an ivory knife handle that would look great on a bowie that I've been working on. However, the box that it had been sitting in also contained a large amount of brass casings which had oxidized and stained a patch of the handle green.

Is there any way of leaching the color out or otherwise removing it?

You might be able to try an oxygen bleach (not chlorine!), or oxalic acid, but it's probably permanent.  Copper oxide is a VERY stable pigment.  Maybe (and I'm not joking) try some tooth-brightening strips or paste?  Ivory is just a tooth, you know.

Thanks Alan! I'll have to give both a shot later this weekend. The stain is fairly bold though, so I'm not going to hold my breath. <_<

Or you could go all insanity wolf, and just incorporate it into the piece. Stain what stain? that's the makings of a first class dragons eye if ever I saw one.

I was kind of thinking the same thing...
