Blue Winged Kookaburra

Hi guys

Here is a pic of a blue winged kookaburra i took the other day in my backyard. This one is a female...the male has a blue tail but he is very secretive

Nice photo; I remember an old song from childhood about a kookaburra sitting in an old gum tree......

Nice looking bird that kingfisher.

Yes they are just a very big kingfisher and really predatory. .very good at killing snakes too.

We also have some little kingfishers too

I thought so, I used to watch them while I fly fished , fast little buggers.......B)

The one in the pic is an eastern variety,  the local ones to me are blue, black and white a bit lighter shade of blue than your second pic...

Rob, those kookaburra's the ones you always here calling on the old Tarzan movies and jungle scenes!! You know right before the spears come flying out of the jungle and the natives attack!!

Hi Josh

About the size of a crow.

Cc those kookaburras are the southern kind and have a different laugh. Ours are northern blue winged kookaburra and make a crazy screaching hooting kind of noise.will try to find a link

That's an interesting bird. I haven't seen a bird with such a big head and little body/tail before.
