how is this pattern done

So this is far above my current skill level and i have no intention of trying something like this anytime soon but im curious how a pattern like this is done.

I would say it is forged close to shape and ground just the edge leaving forge scale on the spine. I would say if your capable of forging and grinding a blade you can do this also.

I'd add that, unlike good practice if you are going for a full polish, don't wire brush the scale off before each trip to the anvil. Leaving the scale on gives a more random pattern that looks less like hammer marks. Think of it like pounding on the blade through a layer of gravel.

as stated above by @Vern Wimmer, but, in my personal preference, i like the hammer marks (deep hits) left with the area around them polished. gives a beautiful contrast

I stand to be corrected, but I've seen that done with an intentionally messed up hammer..........

I'll wait till I'm better before I try brut de forge.......again.
