My KITH entry

Recommended Posts

Hi peops

Well, I have a quenched blade now and I’m hoping to have the knife finished in time for the draw. My first attempt came to a nasty end. It was made from a piece of scrapmascus with a twist welding flaw. I decided to exploit this and extend it into a theme by making a twisted handle with micarta cast directly onto the handle. I came up with a nice supporting tale... ah well, never mind.

Unfortunately there was a delam in the tang which I ground into and in desperation decided to try to mig-weld shut. Well, it bent before the quench at heat and broke at that site after the temper. I gave it a light etch in lemon juice  to see the pattern. More camo than twist.

I tried forge welding the blade to some wrought iron but having never forge welded before, this didn’t work either. Time to start a again...

So I had a rethink and started again with a piece of leaf spring after testing it would harden. I decided to head in a Skyrim direction. First I forged a leaf-shaped blade.

I really need to make a tang setter. Next I forged a wave in the blade. This was a bit of a PITA.

Fast forward this weekend (didn’t take any photos until this next one). I ground in the ricasso area to follow the ebony dagger (mine is much beefier). Carved in some runes and put it through HT. The guard is Thames-found wrought iron, the handle is teakwood (unfinished at the mo) and there will be a wrought iron but cap that will have the tang peened onto it. I had planned to engrave the wrought iron but I don’t think time will allow.

the runes say Dovahkiin (Dragonborn).

By all means take your time! Jeremy just started his. We only have 3 completed blades as it is anyway.

Well it all fits together. Now I just have to finish the hand sanding, engrave and etch the wrought iron fittings, peen it, oil it and put it in a box. A question on vulcanised paper spacers. What I got is pretty stiff. Can you heat it to help conform to the shape or is that a bad idea?

It’s raining here now but I just managed to finish the knife (but for a mustard patina on the top half - currently soaking. So this is number 4 for me. I learned a lot and in retrospect there are a few things I would change. AOL is 13,5/8”, blade is 8,1/4” width is 1,1/2”, spine at the guard is 1/8”. Guard and butcap are wrought iron etched in Ferric Chloride. It has a black-marble like effect the photos don’t seem seem to show well. The tang is peened over and the black ‘spacers’ are epoxy mixed with black acrylic paint in chamfered edges. Handle is tung-oiled teak.

Thanks Zeb. That was the plan from the beginning though I had hoped to get the patina and fittings darker. I might try this again down the line once I can forge-weld. The patina area can be wrought or PW.

Jeremy, I see that saxy lil' sax machine you got all laid out on the counter there behind Charles's ;) you might want to get a handle on that before anyone gets too hot & bothered.

Hey Charles, did you ever get yours in the mail?

It should be handled by this weekend. I have had a doc appointment every day this week. Had to get fitted for the back brace today. Come to find out the support in the back braces are made of kydex. It gets me thinking....:P

Sorry @Wesley Alberson it is taking me so long to get it finished but  promise you it will be done before I have surgery!!!
