Antler Dyeing?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys Google was no help, so I thought I'd go to the best source of info I've ever found. I do a lot of antler handles and I've tried wood stain with decent results but was wondering how you go about making that sweet burnt amber color for antler?

Thanks

Look into using potassium permanganate to oxidize the antler.

Soaking in strong tea works too.  Potassium permanganate is the "traditional" dye on sambar stag because it's also a disinfectant/antiseptic, so antler thus treated can be imported with no worries.
