Jeff Rangel
So this will be my first official quench but my question is, since this will be a quench at home using oil, what do I use to put the oil in so I can get it up to temp before the quench? I was thinking of using a ammo can as I have a few of them lying around. How would I go about getting the oil up to temp safely? Thx
Wes Detrick
Ammo Can would be great. Just make sure it water tight before you put oil into it. I used to just heat up a piece of steel (usually a piece of rebar) in my forge at the same time I was heating the blade, and then quench it into the oil until it was temp I wanted. 1 “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." -Albert Camus http://www.krakenforge.net/
Alex Middleton
Another option is a turkey fryer set real low. Typically by the time I normalize and quench the oil temp is just about perfect. Good luck!

Charles dP
Just remember that Liam Fuller on FiF burned his shop down not closely watching the turkey fryer he was using to heat his quench oil. 1 "The way we win matters" (Ender Wiggins) Orson Scott Card Nos, qui libertate donati sumus, nes cimus quid constet. Joshua States
A hot piece of steel as Wes suggested, a small electric hot plate, a camping stove set on the lowest heat you can get, however you do it, keep an eye on it. Charles ain't kidding about burning the house down. Also, go to the nearest grocery store and get a nice meat thermometer to check the temp with. “So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. Alex Middleton
Definitely, I should have mentioned that. I set mine right next to the forge while I'm heating the blade. I also keep two fire extinguishers in the shop, one of them right on my forge cart.

Jeff Rangel
There is a bit of an issue with using an ammo can. A majority of them are not sealed enough and using some kind of compound isnt meant to be used under liquid for a long period of time. If anyone is interested I am picking this up: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Knife-Blade-QUENCH-TANK-Heavy-Duty-Pro-Quality-2-Sizes-Available-blacksmith/303033148282?hash=item468e2ee37a:m:m812Wa47vfaXSki6TkcGBoA:sc:FedExHomeDelivery!78109!US!-1&frcectupt=true
