Eric Morgan
Found these files at a yard sale (technically a roadside sale ) and I’d never seen a file with a double tang like these... I bought em figuring they’d make decent drawknives if they aren’t case hardened. They're stamped Simonds USA, and 4070 on the reverse side. Any of you guys ever seen files like these? Joël Mercier
According to Alan, Simonds USA are pretty good files. The only Simonds I bought was made in China and quality was barely ok. The dual tang on yours make me think they're designed for draw filing.
Eric Morgan
I’d say you’re right... it’s a shame about the heavy rusting on these, as otherwise they seem new or very close to it.
Joël Mercier
I'd try removing the rust with WD-40 and a file card though there may be other ways.
Alan Longmire
Yep, dedicated drawfiles! Pretty rare, too. DO NOT put WD-40 or other oils on them unless you degrease them with something like acetone and alcohol afterwards. Oil kills files by making an abrasive slurry and clogging the teeth. A little rust isn't a big deal, use them and it will fade. Get the loose stuff off with a wire wheel in a dremel tool, running parallel to the teeth. Or a welder's stainless steel toothbrush-sized wire brush. Or you can have them refurbished by these guys: https://boggstool.com/file-division I have not used them yet, but I have heard nothing but good things about them.
Eric Morgan
Thanks Alan! I forgot to add that the guy said he might have more, so I’m going back this weekend to see if he does or not. *edit* also forgot to add that both side edges of these files are smooth.
