A Grayling with a nice acrylic over black liner with 416 SS bolster and pomel on the cryo quenched NitroV SS blade in closed sheath with second closed sheath for previous knife that was in open top sheath. When I started work in the late 60's on a the high country farming area. I was given a terribly illsuited knife to kill and dress some animal feed (dog tucker) and hated the knife so much I bought one very similar to this design and used it for the following years untill I left farming and entered the wood trades. Garry Keown Posted June 27 Author Share Posted June 27 Made a start on a new project the other day. A comission for a longer bladed companion piece to the tanto I did a while back. Not a traditional Wakazishi (will not have a habaki/blade collar or handle wrap etc) ) but lighlty inspired by that style with 20 inch blade and 9 1/2 inch handle in a back scabbard. First was I needed to draw a pattern with the smaller (western styled) tanto for inspiration. Make a sheet steel template and select a suitable bar of steel and in this case it is 4.3mm 1075 Scribe the template onto the 1075 bar and grind to dimensions do the pre heat treat grind. My forge was not quite long enough to get the full length to temp so I cut a section from the closed far end to allow for "painting" the blade with the heat to ensure the full length was to quenching heat. Have it in the tempering oven for its second 2 hr cycle so will get back to the finish grind after I do the handle shaping on another knife I have to get ready to go for engraving. 2 Von Gruff http://www.vongruffknives.com/ The ability to do comes with doing. Nice white contrasted to gnarly, not any noticeable discoloration. I’ve been shopping around a lot and not very excited about what is being offered……. Especially the price folks are asking. Sheds can have the bark worn down and even late season heads have done so much thrashing against bushes etc that the bark is worn almost flat. The barter was not a barter as such but when I was buying the Harley the guy kept adding extras to what I had thought I was buying and when I mentioned it he said he would be happy with a cheap (as in paying less than value) for a filleting knife and I decided to add in the fisherman as well and gave him them both as a thank you and called it barter even though it was never arranged like that. I've had a request, which included a fishing lure (resin encased I guess) for the handle, but I do not have very educated clients and sometimes it feels like they would like to pay by weight, ergo a filleting knife should be cheap I would use 14C28N which is the only stainless I have and also the most expensive steel I've bought so far, and where I would expect in your money NZ$235 for that fact alone, most people would be unwilling to pay more than NZ$150.
