That is some gorgeous wood Garry.  Out of curiosity, why do you feel the handle should extend closer to the plunge lines?  For aesthetic, or utility purposes?

Mostly for asthetics Alex. with just the smallest part utility

I have been talking to a butcher about boning knives and the difference between how a novice (me that is) uses a boning knife out of the front of the hand, as in standard knife hold where the professional holds the knife with the blade out of the back of the hand whicu necessitate the different designs in the blade and a slightly fuller handle than I would make for a conventional knife. So with that as a guide I made these two with one having a 5 1/2 in blade for sheep/fallow sized animals and a 7 1/4 inch one for work on cattle sized animals. Swamp kauri handles on the 1/8 in 1075 blades with black micarta pins.

This is a Hunter Skinner with canvas micarta on the 1084 blade with this being the prototype offering of the steel with the knife. This was an idea put forward by Bruce so he gets the first one out the gate.

I love my "job" :D

I do have to admit to having two sets of the scales for the bull nosed skinner with the SS and buff horn sitting on the bench after having had to burn them off and start again. On one the ss spacer was about .5mm off of parallel as I inadvertantly had the buff horn on one side the wrong way round and didn't notice it till I went to shape the handle.

The second on the pin I put through to hold the buff, spacer and wood together was a fracxtion hign and I could see the faint lightening of the horn over it as I started the final polish so that was another set I had to burn off.

For the third one I cut grooves accross the base of the ss spacer and when the 3 pieces were epoxied together I finished the cuts into the underside of the horn and wood so it has an epoxy kep rather than a pin.

Valuable lessons learned as these were both $50 scale sets so there are still some learning experiences to be had that hopefully are not repeated

Whew, it's certainly reassuring I'm not the only crafts person on the forum who has to take "side trips" sometimes. :D

This lot just needs an edge on the blades and they are off to new homes

A PH EDC with very rare quilted NZ macrocarpa over 3 pin CB buffalo horn in stamped sheath with attached steel. There is more activity in the macrocarpa than a pic can show.

The professional boning knife is for when an animal is able to be hung in a breaking down shed or butcher shop as opposed to the field boning knife that is for when an animal is broken down on the ground.
6 inch blade of 1075 and this one has Swamp Kauri handles and comes in a slip cover which is a sheath wiothout the belt loop.Boning knife.png

Had a few knives finished the other day with the first two stonewashed blades among them. Really quite taken with the stone washing and not sure whether aI like the p[lain dark handle or the dark handle with the nickle silver bolster. In any case it would be good to hear what you all prefer for the visual.

First is a mini skinner in stone washed 1084 with nickel silver bolster and pins over Tasmanian blackwood handles. A bit of stamping on the sheath with the attached honing steel to complete the set.

IMG_0226.JPG

Then the stonewashed 1084 Hunter Skinner with simple Ebony handles and black micarta pins. Plain sheath to go with the mininlest theme.

The Buffalo Skinner in SS damascus which the light didn't show very well with the Exhibition walnut over the 3 pin buff bolster in stamped sheath with the honing steel.

IMG_0232.JPG

Next is a PH EDC with Desert Ironwood over the 3 pin buff horn bolster on the SS damascus blade. Have a really nice set of letters comin to do impress on the face of the sheath with the initial of the customer.

IMG_0234.JPG

This little kitchen petty has the desert ironwood over the 3 pin paper micarta bolster with ss and micarta pinwork. on the 12C27 blade and is a thank you gift for a special young lady who is final year training in dentistry specialising in denture work. The dental school gets paid but she has been an absolute delight to engage with as she has gone about the difficult (in my case) task of making a set of dentures for me.
