Normalize?

Recommended Posts

I just purchased my first store bought knife metal after five years of repurposing mystery metals.I bought 1095 and I was wondering if I should normalize it before working and shaping it into a knife?

If it came spherodized then you can hold off normalizing until just before hardening to relieve any stresses that built up during grinding.  If you are forging a blade normalize after forging.

This particular steel often comes in all kinds of state. It is one of the steels I wouldn't take a chance and normalize.

I think Joël is assuming you are not going to be forging it.  No need to normalize before forging, but it could be helpful for stock removal if it isn't for sure spherodized.  And Doug means that the if you are forging you definitely do need to normalize after forging.
