Rust as ore?

Recommended Posts

This may have been covered before, but I missed it....anyway, i had to cut down some vertical rebar from my house foundation project due to excessive rusting. I have lots of material that fell off, and it seems like a good start point  as ore for a stack furnace to get bloom steel. Dumb idea or brilliant recycling?

You may want to add a little red ocher powder from a pottery supply or concrete-coloring place to stretch it out and make it a little easier, but yeah, sure, rust is just iron oxide.  How much are we talking? Less than 40 pounds is hard to do in a stack furnace.  Given your climate I'm sure you do have an impressive amount of rust available to you, though. B)

You know it.... Not only do I have a lot of chunky rust from the rebar, but helpful folks liberally distributed vehicle frames, axles, etc. on our land, so i will be mining for years.
