Christmas KITH?

Jeremy Blohm

Recommended Posts

I was told this week that my contract is ready and just needs to be signed off, mixed feeling about that but I cannot turn it down.

Working full day will bring me back down to 12-14 knives per year at best, for sure no time time for a Christmas KITH...

Not a pattern welded blade, but it does have a hamon, not a carved handle but still very unique.

I'll post some photos later and the crowd can say yay or nay.

I think you guys missed what I was trying to say entirely. I wasn't implying that it should be pattern welded, I was just offering insight to historical construction to note that they were not pattern welded, there by suggestingit would be totally legit for those who cant weld. I then offered to make up a bunch of steel bars for free for anyone who might like to make a patterned blade who doesn't have the means to forge weld.

KITH is for all skill levels and I would never want anyone to feel excluded. I'm sorry if it came across that way.

I probably can't play this time, but I'll be a bit of a voice of reason.  Given that there is only 10 weeks at best to get something done, I would encourage you all to keep it simple.  Especially since those 10 weeks will be around the holidays.  We had 9 months for the last one, and still had to extend the deadline :)

Kith 2019 early 2020.    I would love to have a pattern welded blade if I end up participating. The thing is, I don’t have skills enough to forge out a knife yet.  So I would have to stock remove out of a bar of Damascus/San mai. And that’s a lot of steel compared to a big bar you would forge down into a blade.

I don’t know if dwarven blades have Hamons on them but that may be an alternative to make the blade have a little bit of the fantasy aspect added to it.

Well, now I feel a little bit responsible for all of this... With my comment I had absolutely no intention of making pattern welding or carving a requirement for this project. I think the initial point of this KITH be a quick and dirty project. I have had a hankering for carving something, and I felt this would scratch my itch. Just something quick that I could use as a proof of concept and get the enjoyment of a KITH exchange as well. For some it might be trying a Hamon, others a scrap of pattern welding they have left over from a prior project, somebody else might be trying to learn to set a stone... Whatever you think you can get done by Christmas. I would say due to a quick deadline we keep the requirements as ill-defined as possible!

As an aside - this is what my subconscious doodled on my agenda this morning as I was leading a meeting...

I like the idea of a down and dirty kith. Doing a close deadline is a fun challenge to get it done! Just my two¢

If I find a decent steel, I do have some tool steel I'd like to attempt.

Nah! I think we just forgot about the deadline, and got a little passionate about LOTR! And i dont know about the rest of you guys, but I can get worked up a over a seax too! I like the sketch. Thinking about channeling that into a carving?

I'd be in for a down & dirty blade! It's a nice change of pace to just make a simple knife.

Though I do prefer to spend copious amounts of time.

What about a blacksmiths knife with a basic sheath?

How do we set up a poll anyway? Still haven't figured that out!

Sounds good to me! We probably need to vote sooner than later.

Whenever you feel the time is right, go back to the "Christmas KITH 2019" thread, "start new topic" hit the downward triangle next to "content" and select "poll".

I might be in. Depending on theme. I have a lot going on as is, but would love to give it a go.

I like the seax and blacksmiths knife ideas equally. Not much help, I know :P

Edit: if it's decided to be a blacksmiths knife, how about a parameter that there has to be a twist in there somewhere? Like regular, pineapple twist, rubik's, etc.? Just a thought.

Have you guys ever done throwing blades for a kith ?   How bout a 3 set of forged/stock removal throwing blade set.    Fairly easy,  all inclusive, and different.  Considering there isn't much time and all.   Any style.   I remember reading an idea by Geoff Keyes I believe, in using rr spikes and making mini throwing axes of sorts.  I liked that idea.

Throwing seax, elf/dwarf blades, blacksmith blades,  whatever.    Not super critical on steel choice, other than hardenable (superquench?) I guess.   And fun in the end.

Thoughts ?

I'd be up for that.....and I won't even use the 3 I have done already!

I’ll try out posting the poll if it’s not working for anyone. What are the most popular ideas? Seax and blacksmith knife?

Lol I just followed the instructions Zeb gave to Jeremy. I’m mostly clueless when it comes to technology.   I can barely figure out how to operate my phone.

Sorry all, I’ve gotta pull out of Christmas kith.  I haven’t got my propane forge running yet, and my coal forge will melt a knife in seconds. And I just don’t have time  to get it done in time.      I’ll be in for 2020 kith though.
