J. Keeton Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) I have been building a forge for the past couple of months, and I just ordered a forge blower from Blacksmiths depot. I have run into a dilemma, however. I don't know how to attach it to my 1and1/2 blowers. I have seen other forges with flanges that bolt on. I was wondering where I could buy one If I didn't make it clear this is where I am having the problem. I am basically trying to attach it to a 1½ in. pipe. I know I probly could just tape it up with some duck tape, but I was trying for the refined look. Edited November 10, 2005 by Harleyd2900
Glenn Moulton Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Take the blower to a local machine shop and show them you need a flange with a coupling to screw your burner pipe on .Ive seen some with the floor flanges but you would probably have to redrill some holes to fit. They can be found in the plumbing dept.at Lowes,Homeydepo. On mine I just epoxied a coupling inside the blower outlet and didnt use the flange at all.
DFogg Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 The floor flange is the easiest set up as Glenn said. What kind of forge are you building? Don't use galvanized pipe for the burner parts, like I did. Don Fogg
sethhoward Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) For mine, which uses 1.25' pipe, at Home Depot I founs a copper 1" to 1.25" coupling where the 1" side had no threads. It fit perfectly inside the blowers hole. I am sure they have the same thing one step larger. Just something to look for that would be simple. I can post a pic if it would help. J. Keeton Posted November 10, 2005 Author Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) What kind of forge are you building? 34526[/snapback] This is close to what I have at the moment. I do have another burner though. Edited November 10, 2005 by Harleyd2900
DFogg Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 That blower looks like it was made for a coal forge. It will probably be too much for the propane. If it is and you still want to use it, you will probably have to put a gate valve in the line so you can restrict the flow, but it would be cheaper to go to Surplus Center and get a smaller blower. J. Keeton Posted November 10, 2005 Author Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) I wanted it to be super strong because I am using it for 2 burners. Also I have gate valves on both burners, and the blower has a little gate I can oppen and close to adjust the amount of air it takes in. Edited November 10, 2005 by Harleyd2900
Mike Ferrara Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 I have one of those blowers. They have a couple of different sizes, mine is the 164 cfm one. They push a lot of air. Mine is on a coal/ forge but I just used a big enough piece of dryer duct to fit over the whole flange. The forge end needed a flange so I made one by cutting a hole in a piece of sheet metal and welding a round collar to it. I made the collar from a piece of flat bar but a cut off piece of pipe would work too if you have pipe the right size. You could use the same method to make a flange for the blower end. Buying might be easier but I can never seem to find what I'm looking for around here so it's less trouble to make it sometimes.
