Ledus Bowie

Ledus (Lay-dus: Latvian for ice) This bowie was a commission that was inspired by my La Brea Bowie from a few years ago. I think the new one came out quite well, what do you think?

Specs:
Blade Length: 12 inches
Overall Length: 17.5 inches
Guard, Spacer, and Frame: Shibuichi
Liners: silver
Pin: silver
Handle: stabilized blue maple burl

For those of you more knowledgeable on knife history I am trying to find out if anyone has used shibuichi to make a frame on a bowie before. The frame, guard, and spacer were all carved in wax and cast. I do not recall seeing a cast frame on a bowie before but would love to see other examples if you know of them.

Thanks for looking.

Pretty innovative all around! I can't imagine nobody has done a shibuichi frame handle, but I could very very easily be wrong.  I know I've seen shibuichi guards and habaki on east-west fusion bowies, but I do not recall ever seeing a full frame, and certainly not a wax cast shibuichi anything.  It's usually cast as an ingot and rolled/forged to size, as you know.  Nifty idea!

Robert, I was wondering where you had got to. Glad to see you back in the mix!

The Shibu frame is something I have long considered doing. The closest I came was a dagger with 416 and Shibu parts.

The frame and guard were 416, the liners, spacers and ball pommel (cast) were Shibu.

I really love this knife. The texture and patination on the Shibu is glorious.

I assume there are some blind alignment pins in the handle?

Thank you everyone for your comments. Joshua that's a very cool concept. I would love to see that if you have photos. You are correct there are six hidden pins within the handle plus the visible pin.

I do have some photos. This is a reduced size by Eric Eggly at Point Seven.

Being new to all of this, Joshua, all I can say is I hope someday to be able to display blade craftsmanship such as that.  That's incredible work.

  • Thanks 1

That's what drives anyone who creates.  There's always someone we look up to and wish we could match.
