Adam Weller 354
A little more progress: The tang end sticking out will be penned over. There are some weld flaws there but I don’t think they extend to where it will be peened. I plan on doing all the engraving before I put it all together. Now we are too the blank canvas stage. I get really nervous because one cut could ruin a lot of work... Getting the design right and then getting over that inertia for the engraving is the hard part.

Joshua States 2,573
I showed this to Liz last night. Nice! The wife stamp of approval is always good! I remember you mentioning she had her doubts (in a PM I think)... It's not done yet (several critical parts to go), but I'm glad I'm getting her to sway

Adam Weller 354
Did a quick practice piece tonight, psyching myself up to do the actual engraving. This piece of antler is fairly porous, but allows me to practice.

Well I did quickly sketch it on the antler in pencil before I engraved it if that’s what you mean Glad you like it! I’m kinda struggling with the design and how traditional I want it to be. Adam Weller 354
Another quick progress peek: I’m hoping this works. Some things I’m worried about with this antler. It was the only piece I had that would fit these dimensions, but it has some characteristics I don’t like. I really either need to make good friends with a reindeer farmer or become on myself... I need more antler!!! Things are moving slow. I work in a hospital and have 4 kids on an extended spring break. Enough said. Hope everyone is well. Stay home, protect those around you. t cudworth 39
Incredible. That pommel, set into the handle with its texture and finish is absolutely beautiful and very motivating. And when the wife says that. You should be very proud my friend! Another reason why a handmade blade means so much! Months of thinking, pondering, erasing, and planning. I salute you!! Sooo, I just erased the whole thing and I am starting over. I have no idea what it is going to turn out like at this point. BTW, Glad you like it! Thanks for the encouragement. Adam Weller 354
Well, at the prompting of Josh... nudge nudge here is a couple more pics of this knife. It comes at the price of delayed deadlines and field of broken promises, but I’m slowly getting it done. What a crazy year. I wanted this knife to have somewhat of a narrative, I shied away from the perfect straight lines and the look of it being laser cut and strayed more towards the thought that it was engraved over time, by the campfire with things that the author saw/experienced at that time. I must admit I’m kinda disappointed in how the sheath came out, the antler portion had porosity and despite my best attempts you can see it when the ink goes on. I’m trying to decide to just roll with it or make another, I don’t have any more antler of that size so I would be stuck with all wood or leather covered (which I’ve never done). I’ve also decided I want to move toward more locally available supplies instead of relying on shipping and exotic materials. Here yah go Josh, I hope you like it so far! Sorry for the poorly lit and somewhat out of focus, phone pictures) Edited October 18, 2020 by Adam Weller

Joshua States 2,573
I think the handle is nicer than the blade! If you like, I'll send you some antler. I just scored an elk shed last month while hunting. “So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. Adam Weller 354
Thanks guys, glad you like it. Josh, no need to send elk antler I have plenty of elk and deer (mule and white tail) around here. I just don't have reindeer, and you have to get alot to make it worthwhile and find that good pieces. Elk is harder to shape because it's thin and you run into the inner marrow much quicker, but that is definitely what I can get around here so I need to figure out how to use it. Joshua States 2,573
For the small knife, You shouldn't need anything really stout, I think. Maybe something in the tines would work? “So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it.
