Could be black cherry I suppose....the wood seems a little on the light side... I'm not the best at tree ID. Could be something else I suppose.

It also looks much more like oak in these photos. Are the grains open? How's it smell? Is it really heavy?

  • 4 weeks later...

This is the tree it cane from. It is quite heavy and dense stuff. Its not red oak though I'm sure of that. We will have a positive ID once leaves come on the trees. I got a bunch of oak burl the other day. This is exciting stuff. I dont have the patience to let it dry naturally though. I guess I will put it in the rafters of the shop and try to forget about it.

2 years ago I cut up a 4 foot diameter maple burl from my old place and had the exact same thought.  I reassured myself by thinking about the 200+ blocks I would eventually get out of it.

That's a beautiful burl.  I've got a 20" Rockwell bandsaw that saves a lot of that loss from the chainsaw kerf.  Awesome machine.

:D  Wasn't really bragging.  Was kind of hoping someone would ask if it was for sale. ;)

I'm debating on cutting the tree down and harvest it.

I was heating and cooking with a wood stove, so that's how I justified my harvest....
