Joël Mercier
Guard is finished to #400 and ferric dipped+mother's mag. I think it's nice and dirty wrought. The blade has some J hooks that I'm going to remove when the time comes to etch it, when the dry fit is completed. I still have to finish the habaki and make a rear guard copper spacer. On a side note, I think something is off with the proportions. Should the guard be slightly larger? Or it's just because there's no handle yet...I don't know. Joël Mercier
I think I figured out what's wrong with the guard. I'll rework it.
Joël Mercier
I narrowed the guard to better match the ricasso.

Joël Mercier
Rear spacer done. For those who watch this and wonder how the texture is done on the copper, it's by peening with a small rounded punch.
Joël Mercier
Still ways to go. I think the handle looks too chubby and is a tad too long. I'm going to shave around 1/8" off the width and length and see what happens...

Joël Mercier
Thanks again billyO. Here's the handle shortened and slimmed. I decided to stop there and not work on it for a little while. Something is not quite right(again) and I have to figure it out. Maybe the overly long ricasso I had to do to properly design a sap sprout is making it difficult to design flowing lines, I don't know. But I always tend to rush handles so I'm fighting that urge Edited May 8, 2020 by Joël Mercier
Gary LT
It’s a beautiful piece of work Joel. Yes the tang is long, has a purpose. I went back to look at the sketch, does the handle now meet those dimensions on the sketch? Currently the handle looks to stubby. Alan Longmire
From here it looks like the front of the handle is too fat on the underside? Maybe more of a straight line right behind the guarduntil the palm swell? Lovely work, regardless!

Joël Mercier
Thanks Brian and Alan I applied two coats of alcool diluted Fiebings brown leather die with sanding in between. Then a first coat of TruOil. Now I think it looks very much like light maple syrup. On a side note, this is the first time I completely finish a handle before it's glued on the tang. Joël Mercier
I sorta feel bad for not completing this work in time, but life happens I guess. I lately amassed enough will to try and finish this project. Blade finished and handle glued up. Now to the butt cap...
