Rob Toneguzzo
Hey Guys, I was given this Warthog Tusk and want to put it to good use. As it is not the sort of material I will probably ever come by again I don’t want to waste it. Only thing is it has me stumped how best to use it in a handle. I have seen some Warthog tusk handles online were they have just made a blade and fitted it to the tusk pretty much as is but I honestly don’t really like that and don’t think it would be nice to hold or use. I am totally open to and welcome any suggestions. 1 "Old dogs care about you even when you make mistakes" - Tom HALL - Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon wine. Garry Keown
Could you cut and square up rings to make a straighter handle and sepperate them with nickle silver spacers and maybe a colour either side and have a nickle silver bolster and pommel Edited March 26, 2020 by Garry Keown Von Gruff http://www.vongruffknives.com/ The ability to do comes with doing. Joshua States
Why use the whole tusk on just one knife? I have seen these tusks used for an ivory spacer between a guard and other natural handle material. Jean-Louis Regel did a great Damascus Bowie that way. I have three of these tusks in a box waiting for me to decide what to do with them. Anxious to see what you come up with. I think the ivory spacer would look great at the front of a seax. Gerhard Gerber
You'd be justified in hating me because I'm about to tell a joke without a punchline..... In all the years (5?) I've been looking at such things I've seen one South African that used a Warthog tusk in a more sensible way. I did not save the photo and I've wracked my brain trying to remember, sadly not one of my strong points..... I hope it helps to assure you there is a better way, the "traditional" way is only good for bottle openers IMHO
Doug Webster
Maybe incorporate it somehow into an opaki knife handle or karambit sheath
Joshua States
I just saw this one on FB. This from one of my FB friends, Roberto Ottonello. He is an Italian knifemaker who does some beautiful work. A slip joint variety that uses the whole tusk as the handle. Just an idea. 2 “So I'm lightin' out for the territory, ahead of the scared and the weak and the mean spirited, because Aunt Sally is fixin’ to adopt me and civilize me, and I can't stand it. Brian Dougherty
Holy crap! I wonder how he got that fine-grained texture on the fittings. Would that be considered a slip-joint, or some form of lock back? -Brian
Alan Longmire
Looks like a lot of ball-peen taps, or maybe a needle scaler. And that's what I know as a "clasp knife," and early type of lockback without a backspring.

Look at how to make “scribble texture” about halfway through this article: https://www.bladesmithsforum.com/index.php?/topic/24166-simple-engraving-for-knifemakers/ Best of luck! Brian Dougherty
@tsterling Tom! I've been thinking about you lately. That article has been on my radar for quite a while now, and lately I have really been itching to buy some graver sharpening supplies and have a go at engraving. In fact I almost pulled the trigger on ordering some stuff last week, but backed off at the last minute to see how finances held during the current mess. I've spent so much time looking at the graver sharpening/geometry bit that I forgot all about the stippling texture section. I'm going to have to order some toys to play with now -Brian
Joshua States
For those of you with a Foredom Rotary tool, they make a peening fixture that goes on the flex shaft. 8 hours ago, Alan Longmire said: that's what I know as a "clasp knife," and early type of lockback without a backspring. Thank you Alan.
