Thanks for this,twybill(and related) is such a neat old tool.Good article,enjoyed reading it.

(i think author may've tried to romanticise that handle a bit-i don't think it's that old,and it looks like it is all gnawed by mice:)...No wonder,they love varnish,but salt from years of sweat Really attracts them:)

Those are nifty and rarely seen outside Europe.  The Breton French had a six foot long version used for morticing ship frames.  It had a little socket handle in the middle.
